On the Uradfordsville turnpike, about two miles west of Huston'ville, is 'a country store with a dwelling-hous- e in an adjacent yard. Years ago the store was conducted by Burt Woolford, who owned and occupied the- dwelling near by. Wcolford was a unique character, and is remembered by the older inhabitants as a kinsman of , the notorious Gen. Woolford of Civil war fame, and many are the deeds of daring credited to him. The place recently has been called CarNumerous stock penter's station. farms near by are owned by men named DOCTORS SORELY PUZZLED . Strange Events Happen. About eighteen months ago L. A. Far- ris of Lexington, Ky., purchased a stock of goods, the dwelling and storeroom from one of the descendants of the Voolford family, and has since been conducting a general merchandising business there. Everything moved along in the same old way until a short time a.iro, when some strange events transpired . Mr. Farris and wife, who have no children, adopted an orphan girl several years ago, and she made her home with these good people as one of the family until the is now about 16 years of age. Daily large crowds visit the place and go away puxzled as to the genesis of her remarkable and rare powers. The superstitious negroes of the locality are very much worked up over the affair. Farris and the attending physicians can offer no explanation, and are as much puzzled a the crowds that come and go. A few of the visitors say that the spirit of Wolford Is giving vent in the mind of the girl, and believe upon her recovery that all will be well. Every medical attention is being offered by her parents, who are anxious for her speedy recovery. NEW YORK, Nov. 23. Two heavily laden Third avenue elevated trains crashed Into each other at midnight last night at the One Hundred and Twenty- ninth street station and caused a panic that called out the ambulances of the Harlem hospital and the police. Dispatches from Toklo received at the Japanese legation hera as late as today make no ment!on of Japanese warships being dispatched to prevent Russian war vessels reaching Port Arthur. On the contrary, the advices are to the effect that there Is a favorable outlook regarding a settlement of the questluns at Issue between Japan and Russia. Nothing Is known here of the reported occupation of WIJu by Japan, and offl- cials say they would be surprised to have the report confirmed In view of the fact that this is the port which United States Minister Miller has gone to Chemulpo to endeavor to have opened to the world's trad. If the re port is true, the officials Fay, there can be but one conclusion drawn from the fact, namely, that the move is a war measure dn Japan's part and is made In full consideration of the fact that It Is no longer possible to avoid a hostile clash with Russia. One popular Toklo newspaper has twice been officially suspended for publishing verses indirectly suggesting the assassination of the ministers. It is also feared that popular feeling may manifest itself December 5th, when the Diet meets, unless some decided development in the negotiations occurs In the meantime. The Ministers remain reticent, professing confidence in their ability to control the situation. "The blood Is the life cf the flesh."
