Telegram readers leaving the city for a week or mowcaa hare, their paper sent to. their address regularly by mail, without additional cost, by making the request, in ptraon or by postal card, at the office, No. 149 South West V , Temple. NOV. Z 1903. The Telegram Extra the Genuine Article. One of the three objects of a legal execution, viz., that of setting an awful example to deter others from crime, was fully accomplished in the general publicity given yesterday to the story (if IVter Mor- tensen's death. The intense and widespread interest in the legal killing occasioned the greatest sale of newspapers in "Salt Lake and the surrounding circulation terri tory ever recorded in local history. Although The Telegram was not upon the street with its extra until an hour after the execution, the . public was so swift to catch on and distinguish the true NEWSPAPER from the spurious Imitation in the shape of the diaphanous FAKE that a half doz-;enewsboys were trying to sell a few minutes after tthe killing, that The Telegram Hooded jthe city, as it were, with the news, from one end to the other, "long before the noon hour was over. The demand ;from country agents, by postal card and telephone, likewise was unprecedented. Provo was supplied Jtwice, and its third call had to be turned down of no train service at the hour the order was Z received. Thrice Murray telephoned for more, a large bundle was taken for the San Pedro towns; and so on all along the line. Nearly all our carriers tasked for additional paiers, and the newsboys cam" early"an often after the regular editions. There seemed to be no end to the demand. One rural free delivery carrier ordered a dozen" for this I'morning, and even St. Mark's hospital telephoned a late supply. Nobody appeared to want to - read anything else but The Telegram's account of Mortensen's fearful end. THE PUPLIC IIAI 1LEAKNED TO PLAGE CONFIDENCE IN ANY EXTRA THE TELEGRAM ISSUES. At 5 p. m. the press was stopped, with a large supply of pajors ;on hand, and in the belief that every man. woman and child in the city must have read the news. Put t 5 this surplus was exhausted and a tat dozen disappointed newsboys, crying for "more," like Oliver Twist, had to te told The Telegrams ; were all gone. The Telegram certainly proved itself the PEOPLE'S PAPER yesterday.' Z Through its columns thousands and thousand of persons read an unbiased and true account of Peter Mortensen's fate, and thus learned the awful "lesson once again that the wages of sin is death. Mr. Stevens was entirely ignorant of anv such feature of the exposition until a few days ago, when a Hood of letters from proud mothers all over the United States legan to pour in upon him, inquiring for details of the projoseil infantile kLow. Since then the deluge has continued and Mr. Stevens begins to wear a hunted look. The trouble all arose from the activity of some "miscreant," whose identity is unknown to the exposition management, as is the nature of his "graft." This individual has caused it to lceome known to the mothers of the Nation that a prire will Ik of. feied by the exoition management to Im tx?t' formed, baby to Ik entcml at the World's fair. The letters to Mr. Stevens on the Mihject are marvels of the epistolary art. such as only women could write. They ask for every conceivable kind of both relevant and irrelevant, and strive all the subtle arts known to women to prejudice by Mr. Stevens in favor of their particular babv or babi s. Some wish to know if advance phc togrnphs of the babies an- - wanted, and. if so, if the infant is to be taken with or without its swaddling clothes. Others wish to know if the contest is confined to white babies only, or whether the color line eliminated. Still others want to know if, twins or triplets may le entered. Mr. Stevens at first essayed to answer the letters, telling the mothers that it was all a cruel joke, but he has given up the attempt. lie is now anxious of the hoax, nnd only to discover the after thai is ipiite willing to leave him to his victims, as a punishment lefltting the crime.
