".. u-ii- The plea, for. a partisan municipal ticket, so ingeniously set forth by our able morning contempo rary of the' Republican persuasion, will hardly per suade. Its argument is based on a false premise, which promviz., that ''there are no ise assumes that we have a word to represent a class of persons and the class doesn't exist. Tliat is pretty nearly an absurdity. Does our contemporary con tend that, because a man is a Kepublican, he cannot therefore reject any of the tenets, but must be a non-partisans,- '- hide bound zealot for all of them? Is it not history that the principles of a party change? Is there any such thing todav in Utah as the 1(5 to 1 doctrine among sane Democrats? The Telegram does not question for a moment the integrity, of the Tribune's statement that "as good men for office, or for any purpose as yon can "find anywhere, or at all, are in the ranks of the Republican .party;" which is not equivalent to saying, however, that. all ihe good cit izens are to be found in that political organization. It is a matter of no little congratulation that the aroused public sentiment of reform has awakened ihe party in power to a sense of possible danger. This fear', of itself, may be a guarantee' of better things. The arrogance and recklessness of partisan politicians of the Eastern cities is almost invariably tempered by the fear of an. awakened public conscience and not infrequently results in putting up citizens as party candidates as the only salvation of the ruling organization. It may be that the partisanship which our contemporary so ably advocates is the lesser of two evils, but the independent people of Halt Lake will not accept the situation without some sort of pledge that we are to have unadulterated Republican rule of the highest order, and that, too, in the real interest of the citizens, and not that bigamous suzerainty yclept the wherein the ecclesiastical power is dominant and the people's voice is nil. This is, this must be, the day of better things for our splendid city and State. To whom shall we, as an independent, body politic, entrust the reins of for the nextterm? government lirst-clas- s l, self-governin- g Mr. Ferny Fernstrom Points to His Record.
