A bolt of lightning struck the Ogden power plant, consuming the fuses connecting the line to Salt Lake and instantly every electric lamp In this city ceased to give light. The electrical storm which lasted several hours during the early part of the night did not do any serious damage here as far as has been learned. A number of street cars were struck, but in each instance the lightning ran down the trolley and did no further damage than to burn out the lusts and temporarily disable the cars. A large poplar tree near the corner of West Temple and North Temple streets was struck and felled. Several open circuits caused by the the lightning rang the fire alarm and undepartment was given a number of expected practice runs. 122 Main The Rev. ' Mr. Arnold's rise in the scale of authority has been from tho very bottom. He began in boyhood as a water carrier to construction crews at the rate of a half a dollar per day. He was attentive and tenacious. He held down that job for two years before any recognition came to him. He had then outgrown his job and his salary as well, and he was promoted. Then Drove a Ilule Car. "Tt was a proud moment -- for me, I tell you," said Mr. Arnold, When the superintendent called me intoa his office and gave me a job driving span of mules that hauled the car to and from the Oregon Short Line depot. I felt as happy as a king as I first took the reins, chucked at my mules and drove off on my initial trip. "I drove that mule team for two years when I got another call to the superintendent's office. I wondered what was up, but he told me he had a better run for me. He put me on a "bob-tailecar with a span of young mule?, new to the service, and told me to collect my own fares. I was out then, without a conductor and was in absolute charge of my own car. "I held that "bob-tailejob down until 1SS3, after ten years of service, when they put m? where I am now. I have been assistant superintendent since that time and have always tried to do the best I could by both the company and the men." Mr. Arnold gave an interesting deof the equipment of the comscription1873 when he first went to work, pany in saying: Three Miles of Track in 1873. "We had three miles of track. The lines were from the old Utah Central, now the Oregon Short Line depot, to Third South and Fourth East, which was then known as the Dr. Benedict corner. Our stables were located there. The other line was on First South from Main to Sixth East street. "The roadbed was very expensive for tho?e days. We ran the cars on flat rails laid oh stringers. All curves were of cast iron, made In sections of ten feet each. The radius of each curve was eighty feet. "Our rolling stock consisted of three mule cars of a total capacity of seventy discarded passengers. They were the road. "In 1873 the First South line was extended to Twelfth East street and the little black Spanish mules were put on ail cars. Electric Power Came in 1889. This was kept up until thirteen years ago, and since that time we have been scarcely able to do our own work. "In 1874 we used to do freight tohaulthe the depot ing with teams, from Z. C. M. I.
