In size and possibilities our city has gone beyond the era of small things. The citizens must wake up if we expect, to keep in the procession. Two things have caused this condition, a general prosperity that causes business men to disregard the way their money paid in taxes is being raised, and a resultant willingness to attend to business affairs alone and let small men and run the citv's business. WEDNESDAY EVENING, AUG. 19. non-taxnaver- It is well for the reputation of (ieorgia that Warden Allagood, the woman llogser. Is to he from his position. It is certain that: there will he no more whipping of female prisoners in Aleorpa. The storm of indignation which swept over the Union when the story of the brutal Hoggins of Mamie De Crist was published, aroused the gallant men of Georgia to the gravity of the situation and they were prompt in acting. Miss De Crist's reexplanation that she was whipped because she jected the advances of Warden Allagood has caused a shock throughout the State such as has never before been experienced. When the Legislature convened, in response to hundreds of telegrams denouncing Allagoods brutality, a resolution was dis-ehare- d im-mediatel- adopted forbidding that the lash shall be used on female convicts. Gov. lerrell has commanded that the prison commission discharge Allagood and this will undoubtedly be obeyed. The public is divided as to the truth of the woman's that she was improperly approached by Warden Allagood, but whether her conduct was good or bad, whether her character was unblemished, whether she has told the truth or not, these questions have little bearing on the case. A white woman has been Hogged by a white man, one a convict at the mercy of a man clothed with authority of the law. the other the man, above all others, supposed to see that the pitiful creatures under his charge are humanely treated. It is also probable that Mamie De Crist will be pardoned, and it is certain that the developments in her case will eliminate many of the brutalities which have disgraced Georgia's convict as-tertid- n 1!. ar V n a!J I.
