SAN FRANCISCO, July 31 Stephen Elkins, Jr., son of the United States' Senator and is again in San Francisco to press his suit for the hand of Edna Wallace Hopper, the young California actress who is battling in the courts of British Columbia for a share of the millions left by the late Alexander Dunsmuir. lie had been here for the part live days, a frequenter of the Palace hotel and other places of social resort, and yet his presence did not become generally known. That young Elkins is determined to wed Miss Hopper and that she is willing to accept the name and companionship he offers no one who has enjoyed the company of the young couple will gainsay. In fact, it is understood on ample authority that their betrothal is certain to follow the first assurance that the younger Elkins receives from his father of parental condonation for his matrimonial step. That he will receive this assurance is only a matter of hope and speculation with the young lovers, for already the elder Elkins has sternly emphasized his objections to the matrimonial alliance, and is even now ignorant of his son's presence in San Francisco. multi-millionair- e, Increpse at Yale. NEW HAVEN, Conn., July 31 Seven hundred and eighty-fiv- e young men are candidates for admission to Yale in the undergraduates entering classes of next September. T,a?t year the total was 631. The academical department leads with 416 candidates. BIG ISSUE LAWYER DENIES THAT ELKINS IS BACK OF THE SUIT. When Miss Hopper first an- nounced her intention of appealing to the courts of Victoria to ?rt aside the will of Alexander Duns- muir, and it became known that she had engaged the services of Judge Coyne of New York, the gos- sips of the Eastern metropolis in- () si?ted that she was being financed in her legal undertaking by young Elkins, and for support of this con- tention the fact was cited that her lawyer was the attorney of the Elkins. To this insinuation, however, Judge Coyne gave an indignant de- and added that Miss Hopper In tnial, his services hnd been prompted by persons entirely for- eign to the interests of the Elkins family. Senator Malvano, secretary-generof the Foreign office, while leaving his house on his way to his office today, was suddenly attacked by a man who struck him two violent blows with a stick on his head and then ran away. The Senator's assailant, however, was almost immediately arrested. He was identified as an Italian named Eufr'a, who had lost his fortune on account of the revolutions in Guatemala, and who h?ul unsuccessfully pressed his claims for compensation. Buff a considered that his failure to obtain redress was due to Senator Malvano.
