A freleht engine, No. 1516, on the Union Pacific railroad, blew up" at Otto, fifteen miles west of here yesterday, scalding Fireman Ed Carlson so badly that he died shortly after being brought here, and, severely injuring Engineer D. D. Sweeney and Head Brakeman "Whaley. The injured men arrived In Cheyenne just as the funeral of Engineer Michael Lyons, who was killed in a similar accident last Sunday, was being held. The locomotive and a engine were demolished and thehelper track damaged, thus delaying traffic. The engine is the same type of locomotive as the 1512 which blew up at Dolores Sunday and killed the engineer. Immediately after the arrival of the injured men in Cheyenne, twenty engineers and firemen held a meeting and decided to throw up their positions rather than go out again cn one of the 1500 class locomotives. It was voted that these engines are unsafe. As the and a shop hand named Hansen, who were In the cab at the time, miraculously escaped with their lives, although they were bijulsed and burned by the escaping steam. The engine was almost a complete wreck. After exploding, the train and engine ran for a distance of a hundred feet and came to a stand. None of the passengers war injured. The company officials cannot explain the explosion save by saying that It was due to some hidden defect in the material of the boiler. "I A Oat EMEMBERS FIRST LOVE Leaves Half of Fortune to Wife Whom He Had Divorced. NEWPORT, It. I., July 16. A sur prise came with the making of the will of Gordon McKay, the millionaire, fa mous for his Invention of the machine for sewing shoes, thought to be on his deathbed. It had been generally said that all of his vast fortune would go to Harvard university. However, It Is not true that Mr. McKay's wealth, when it shall have been bequeathed, will all go to the big university. He has no children, nor has he any relatives who will have any claim upon the ostate. But years ago tl" .( was a romance in the millionaire'? i . It ended In the divorce court, but this does not seem to have left him feeling unfriendly toward the woman Who was once his wife. She was the daughter of Gordon McKay's housekeeper, and he watched her grow up from early, awkward girlhood into beautiful womanhood. She went to the altar with him, far his junior In years, but for awhile they seemed very happy. He lavished money upon her, took her to Kurope, gained for her the highest social recognition, even to being invited to court days In England, Germany and Austria. Then, returning to America, he himself, it Is said, told his beautiful wife that the great difference in their ages wa3 an untair ouruen to ask. her to boar, and for her sake he got a divorce. Later sue muiiied Auojpn von uruening, a young German, who himself is wealthy. And now, when the will of Mr. McKay became known, it was found that half of his great fortune of many millions is to go to his divorced wife when he dies. This act is In keeping with what he did when she was married to Mr. von Bruening, for the wedding gift of her former husband to the bride was a check for $100,000. 1 1 Indicted for Bad Dream.
