Show VJ mm I SUNDAY, SEPT. 18, 1969 una Sunday HeroW 19 r Outdoor Roundup By tit, 7 Casey Bown JUST UNPACKED... HURRY Paramount to a successful hunt of any kind is the amount of preparation one is willing to give to his days afield both before, during, and after those days. First requirement is to be certa'n that our gun, rifle or shotgun, is clean, free of obstruction, well, and hits where we hold it. Nothing is so frustrating as going afield to find that the gun is malfunctioning cr for some unexplainable reason is not on target The little time it takes to recheck and field test our firearms ahead of each hunt is without a doubt among the most important measures we can take to assure a safe and successful outing. Next move is to get out prior to the season for a looksee at the hunting area of our choice. For while it is true that all our game are creatures of habit, it is also true that habitat conditions do change and the game is where this habitat is found whether it is of the winged or hoofed variety. Best by product of this look ahead of the hunt is the assurance that locked gates or "no trespassing" signs have not been put up since your n last visit. Private lands still form a major of the country we hunt and even though we gain permission to trespass one time it docs not mean open entree forever. To go out of our way and give a simple "thank you" after the hunt is further assurance that we might b iunc-tioni- urn are here se. u. ng por-tio- to come again. Inspection and repair of mechanical and camping equipment is also necessary to a carefree outing. This should include everything from well broken in comfortable footwear to chains and an extra can of gas. It should require all the more careful planning and increased necessities in direct proportion to the length of the stay and the distance one is going 'into the backcountry. Based on the reasonable assumption that if the game is worth seeking it is well worth caring for, it behooves us to get the cleaning, skinning, and washing down of the carcass done as quickly as possible after the kill is made. Washing the carcass with clean water does NOT spoil the meat. In fact, it is the best assurance of edibility later on just so long as it is dried after washing. At this point it might be well to remind that the law requires one wing of our upland game be left feathered and attached to the body of all upland game species so that kind and sex of the bird are identifiable. The same applies to the open bull elk hunts and the limited areas where buck deer are the only legal game. On these latter hunts either the head and horns or the sex organs must, remain attached to the animal. We Utahns have never in modern times had more choice of outdoor experiences during these fall harvest days. With grouse, rabbits, chukars, Huns, waterfowl, big game, pheasants and quail all to be hunted during the next six weeks it is a dream come true for any outdoorsman. Add the fishing pole to rifle and shotgun and one must conclude that these Indian Summer days have something for everyone. Odds and Ends Loss of ducks to botulism this year have been limited to the Farmington Bay and Cache Valley areas. Waterfowl hunting forecasts still call for a fine duck season ahead, though the numbers of and for goodness sake do not geese will be down forget that the geese do not become legal targets until one week after the Oct. 11 duck opener. Nice guy, Gene Chantrey. A real outdoorsman, sportsman, and a friend indeed. Thanks for coming along when help was needed, Gene. - - - - A letter from Brent C. Chandler berating our recent coverage of the lower Strawberry River fish kill. No matter how the Roundup read, Brent, rest assured that any unwanted trout kill is a tragedy in our book as well as yours. By JOHN (BUD) PHELPS Change Noted On Ducks, Geese Scattergunriers are reminded that this year there will be a separate opening for the duck hunt and the goose hunt. In the pas both hunts have opened on the same day, but because of a drop off in Canadian goose population it was necessary to move the opening hunt back one week. The duck hunt will begin Oct 11, but hunters will not be allowed to shoot geese during the fir t week of the duck hunt. The goose hunt will open Oct. IS and then both duck and geese will be allowed to be taken. GOOD START 629 series, they can pretty tall for both walk awhile over those scores.
