Show SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, J0S6 Youthful Actress Prefers Mature Roles Utah Utdh County. naitv Herold At 23 Barbara Anderson says she's "too old" to play ingenues. The featured feminine player in "Iron side," the Channel 2 sleuth series, says: "I want to play the woman lead all my life. I'm too old to play an ingenue." This predilection for the more mature roles appears even more strange when one contemplates the countenance of the native Brooklynite. Maybe her almost obsessional interest in tennis does it, but she looks like a competitor for a high school beauty pageant award. The truth of the matter is, she became Mis Memphis in 1962, losing by a fraction, the title of Miss Tennessee for the "Miss America Pageant." One of the things she didn't lose, however, was her histrionic ability which won her roles in the classic Greek and English drama and ultimately notice by a talent agent which paved the way for a Universal con- tract. In "Ironside" she plays the role of a detective, with only a smidge of sex involved. "There's no real sex in the series," says Miss Anderson. "At times there is a suggestion of sex, which is more effective, anyway, than making it obvious." The blonde thespian who first began serious acting at Memphis State University, says that her classical dramatic training has put her in good stead for her career. "I couldn't work without my background in drama," she asserts. "I don't know how people work without the classics." The serious minded Miss Anderson also claims that ihe study of existensialism has helped her. In the meantime she's concentrating on "Ironside." About her current series and lead in the show, she says: "Raymond Burr is a pro. There's no cutting up in working with him. I like to work hard and to go home and have fun. But I like to say, 'this is a good day's work.' " Consistent with her seriousness she claims the tragedies in the headline depress her, she's got too much to do and "I'm not thinking about marriage now."
