In spite of the bad weather the spectator list far below the number of participants, the 1961 meet win go oown in history as the biggest meet from the standpoint of athletes partievent. cipating in the two-da- y According to Eddie R. Kimball, meet director, there were 64 schools that registered for this years activities. A record breaking 4561 boys enrolled for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday competition. The highest previous y number was 4100. , 1800 were In addition there girls .from 33 schools in the marching demonstration, that required separation into two groups; for narticination in the precision drills that took place on the Cougar football field. Two of the broken marks occurred in the Class A competition and one in the junior college ranks. Strangely, there were no new marks in any of the track events, all of them coming in the field events, where- - the - marks were not so badly affected by winds and bad weather. Weren't Concerned Times were cu4 in at least two of the running events, but the strong winds prevented vtheir being considered for new records. However, they- did indicate that competition was keen and that athletes are in good shape for this early in the season. Phil Reynolds, Payson, sent one record into the discord when he tossed, the discus to a new mark of 163 ft. 9 inches. Darrell Darrington, Ricks College, tossed the discus 133 ft. 8 inches for a new junior college mark. The high school girls marching exhibition was one of the really colorful attractions of the; day. Thirty-thre- e marching 'groups, with some 1800 gaily uniformed girls marching into the stadium and around the track and onto the football area for their demonstration. The mile run gave all the runners plenty of difficulty. At least half of the time they were running against- a strong wind and times were "not too good. Gary Lambert. Olympus, made the four laps in 4:35.8; Ralph Stan ley, Dixie, was timed in 4:59.3 for the junior colleges, and Ron Lee, Falon, Nev., made the cir; v cuit in 4:39.2. A record breaking time was noted inr the 440 yard runs but winds still were strong, and no indications were given that new marks would be allowed..
