Often I get at a loss to know just what shade of green to use. There are a hundred trees that each have three or four shades of green in them. And the snow they tell me that I should shade it more or use more blue, but I have looked at the snow and I can see no blue. Sometimes there is a little shadow, like the shadow of a tree, but that would be gray instead of blue, as I see it. I love pink, and the pink skies are the most beautiful. Even as a child, the redder I got my skies with my father's old paint, the prettier they were. If I had n't started painting, I would have raised chickens. I could still do it now. I never dreamed that the pictures would bring in so much. to paint in my old ageone might say, though I I started had painted a few pictures before. I won a prize for my fruits and jam, but not for the pictures. And then, one day, a Mr. Louis J. Caldor of New York City, an engineer and art collector passing through Hoosick Falls, saw arid bought my paintings. He wanted me to paint more. He came back several times. He took them down to New York to show in the galleries, and three found -- their way into a Museum of Modem Art exhibition. Grandma Moses was on her way ! When I first commenced to paint with oil; I thought every painting would be my last one, so I was not too interested. Then the requests commenced to come, so I have painted on and on. I think I am doing better work than at first, but it is owing to better brushes and paint. I can get little brushes now, which I couldn't get during the war when sometimes I had to use a match. f Before I start painting, Iget a frame, then I saw a Mason-it- e board to fit the frame, (I always thovght it a good idea to build the sty before getting the pig; likewise with young men: get the home before, the wedding.) Then I go over the board with linseed oil, then with three coats of flat white paint to cover up the darkness of the board. With two coats, the dark vould strike through in you start to jsome places, and three give it body, so when -paint the picture, you don't have to puttm so much)f colored paint The tube paint is quite expensive, and you have to use it accordinglythat's my Scotch thrift, you see. Now the board is ready for whatever scene my mind may produce. Whatever, it's always something pleasing and ' the fame, it came to for all that publicity As ma so late that I am too old to care for it now. and It makes me think of just before my husband Thomas died (in 1928) . As I say, I had always liked to paint, but only little pictures for Christmas gifts and things like that. Thomas never talked about my painting he thought it was foolish. But one night, a few weeks before his death, he saw one of my paintings and liked it. Then he just couldn't keep away. Those last weeks, whenever I started to do a little painting, he was right there watching and liked it so much. I am not superstitious or anything like that. But there is something like an overruling power. I never thought that I would do such work. I never know how I'm going to paint until I start in;' then something tells me what to go right on and do. It was just as though Thomas had something to do with this painting business. I have always thought ever since, ! wonder if he has comeback, I wonder, if.he is watch- ing over me as I paint. .
