There will be visitors from Southern California, University of California, Stanford, Univer-sity of Utah, and bthersV Some y of the works are already in BYU the hearsa Symphony, aijid some will be (performed by people from the other participating schools. The . Symposium promises to present a real spectrum of works as they are written in our time. Who knows but vhat we may hear a work from a! budding Bar-to-k or Schoenberg or Stravinsky? We may expect to hear some rather conservative (works from some I composers to be sure. exThere will be somej 1'far-out- " sure. And music for perimental the whole area in f between will be represented. For those who wish to see how the; young composers of today are thinking, this program represents a real opportunity. I might also mention that some of the outstanding composers of America today will be accompanying their charges on this trip. Dr. Andrew Imbrie j of the University of California, a student of Roger Sessions aind, a brilliant composer in his own ;right will be bringing his group of; promising students. Ingolf Dahl, who has been one of th outstandng scholars oif Stravinslty, and whose works are 'not: unknown to musicians in our area;; is bringing the students from Southern , Cali' .' fornia. This event will be a real treat. May I encourage the people of Central Utah to attend and enjoy as many of the programs of the Symposium as possible. de-whi- i - " ' - - H. I - ID f'vV ". "? Composers from the: western states are encouraged f to send in orchestra scores for . performance by the Utah Sym-, phony. Thus the program has given first performances of many new works from this part of the courtry. It is rather exciting to . hear the new ones when they are hot off the griddle. Of course, .the quality "of the works .varies much as do the styles.. Some are amateur or student works, while ; others are fully mature compos-,er- s which seem destined to some j sort of artistic life on the concert stages. Some of the composers are trying to burst ' out of the re strictions of the conventional .;. styles, and incorporate new their art, while others react to innovations with 'suspicion "and hold fast to the good of older music. the ' works wh'ich are aFrankly, little more ,extreme and advanced seem to catct the interest of the younger v people more. This is not be-- ; cause the music resembles jazz or dance music so much as be--. cause the younger generation " hears more of the modern, sounds and expresses itself through more than the I experimental means ; more mature listeners who have $ already settled in. their listening k I ' ' , - V&Stfttttf&X i wliich sic ' t i .
