Show open A war hero and pioneer flyer takes a considered look at the future and makes some amazing predictions. iNY reality, what will be accomplished in the next 50 years of aviation would, in the eyes of his friends, qualify one as a fit subject for a mental hospital. I can speak from experience, because 25 years ago I ventured such a glimpse 25 years into the future. Although several of my predictions fell short of what actually has taken place, ray description of multiengined ic air transports, " trans-ocean- highservices, flying military aircraft, and efficient helicopters sounded to many like the outpourings of an unbalanced mind. But, with this possible indictment vividly in mind, I will make the following predictions for aviation in wide-rangi- the next . military aircraft, the vance of aviation as the world's primary means of travel over appreciable dis- -' fences will be equally hard to comprehend. Transport planes will progressively graduate from today's "giant" aircraft with speeds of 350 mph to veritable air liners, which by 1960 will be cruising high above the weather with silent vibrationless comfort, initially in the speed band of sound, or about 600 mph.. Continuing advances in the development of jet power may move these speeds up to 2,500 mph. Chicago and Miami will be 30 minutes apart. You will be able to cross the continent in about an hour, span the Atlantic in less than two hours, and cross the Pacific in something like four hours. The application of atomic power to transport aircraft will bring to reality aviation potential of being man's most economical, and safest, means of travel Because of the infinitesimal weight of atomic fuel compared to that of thousands of gallons of gasoline now required for propulsion, the atomic engine will make possible tremendously increased payloads and ranges.. This will mean far more efficient aircraft and, consequently, relatively lower and lower cost for the traveler and the shipper. While these atomic-powerair liners will link major cities over the continent and across the world, helicopters will progress from today's reciprocating er and engines to then to atomic propulsion, ' increasing in size to carry 50 to 100 passengers, and in speed to the swiftness of bur present transport aircraft schedules. To utilize this advanced means of transportation, cities of any size will zone building heights in their downtown areas and bridge ad- attempt to visualize, within 50 percent of ng 50 years. . Long before that time has passed, military aircraft, both fighters and heavy bombers, will progress from turbo-j- et engines at the speed of sound to the more engines powerful ram-j- et that will drive speeds up to 2,500 to 3,000 mph. Even these will be only stepping stones to rocket-drivguided missiles that will make obsolete our present concepts of fighters and bombers. Carrying a much further developed and more devastating atomic bomb, these .war machines will be controlled electronically, and will require human help only for take-of- f. Speeds of these nuclear-powerguided missiles will increase progressively from ' 2,500 mph to 25,000 mph, and will locate their targets with acoustical devices as en ed yet undeveloped. This, I admit, is an ugly picture,, but as man develops his ability to engineer those deadly instruments, the need for them will diminish proportionately. In this fact lies mankind's greatest hope since the beginning of time. Spectacular as are the w developments ahead Jor the streets to make heliports an jdeal convenience for the greatest number of people in each community. Development of electronic and control will ' , devices make , the operation of aircraft independent of the weather's caprices. Finally, in the span of this next half -- century of aviation, space ships will be- -. come commonplace for interplanetary travel. With luxurious accommodations for 1,500 to 2,000 passengers, they will use atomic power to develop speeds up to 5,000 mph or better with a practically unlimited range. In fact, space ships in the year 2008 will be semi-sel- fsustaining planets within themselves. What lies ahead for aviation? Our progress will be limited only by the limits of human imagination. To develop these things and even far greater wonders, man already has God-givintelligence, as well as the capacity for the knowledge they will require. Yet, unless we can anchor our knowledge to moral principles, science may turn out to be not the guide but the betrayer of humanity. With aviation's develop ment in the hands of men of ..,., good will, we have, for the first time in our long history, the one instrument that can forever eliminate the barriers of time and distance, of ignorance and misunderstanding, which have set men against each other since time began. In terms of human relationships, these advances in aviation mean that the world is growing progressively smaller. The time is not far off when people of all nations will have the means of meeting and understanding one another, and for eliminating the petty hates and jealousies that " ed jet-pow- -- Vf v viSi New breed wars. For, in the years ahead, every community on the face of the earth wul be a port of entry and departure for every other city, town, and hamlet on .the vast ocean of air on whose shores, every man lives. Then, instead of being the most deadly weapon man has created, the airplane will truly become the Angel of Peace that God always intended it to be.
