The Herald presents it here as a special Easter feature. Probably no spot on earth holds so much tradition for so many peo- ple as Jerusalem, anciently known as the City of Peace. And now, as in the earliest periods of history, what happens in this Holy Land will 'influence the lives .of peoples throughout the world. In spite of the unhappy picture of tension and unrest which it presents today, and the forbidding aspect of miles of barbed wire coiling endlessly along a deserted land, I came here determined to find an aura of holiness in this venerated land. Perhaps the loveliest spot' in Jerusalem, and one which to me seems most sacred, is the Garden Tomb. Here indeed was peace, within a small informal garden surrounded by an 6ld stone'' wall through which a little stream had found its way. At the Well of Jericho, near the excavations of the ancient city, we saw many women from the nearby refugee camps fill their water Jars, and with practiced ease, place them upon their heads. As I watched these women walk by, proud and erect in their beautifully embroidered dresses and long white scarves flowing gracefully over their heads and shoulders, I thought of the line from Genesis, speaking of Rebekah, "And she went down to the well and filled her pitcher and came up." There is a legend which says that no bird can fly across the Dead Sea because the air is poisoned. On this desolate shore, the lowest spot on earth, where sterile stood and looked about us. To the north the Jordan River curved its muddy way through the plain over which the Israelites crossed 3000 years ago on their way to the promised land. To the east stood Mt. Nebo where Moses died. To the1 south we could see the cliffs containing the caves where, in recent years, have been found scrolls bearing ancient He- ft aerial glimpse.
