Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, August 29-31, 2018 The Park Record C-7 ‘Women of Trachis’ makes a debut Production opens at Classical Greek Theatre Festival Submitted by Classical Greek Theatre Festival The 48th annual Classical Greek Theatre Festival presented by Westminster College will mount and tour a new production of Sophocles’ tragic masterpiece “Women of Trachis.” Haunting masks and medieval-inspired costumes set the stage for Sophocles’s tragedy when the story of love potions, poisons and prophecies debuts at Westminster College Sept. 6–8 and 13–15, then tours the state of Utah. The Westminster performances will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Courage Theatre in the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts, 1840 S. 1300 East. Tickets are available by visiting www.westminstercollege.edu/campus-life/ events-and-performances/the- atre-arts-performances/women-of-trachis. Thought to have been written about 440 B.C., midway through the poet’s career, “Women of Trachis” has long suffered from neglect by scholars despite its sophistication and raw energy. This translation rescues the immense lyrical power and tragic grandeur of the play from obscurity, restoring the music of a poetry originally meant to be sung and danced collectively. Mutability, uncertainty, a universe of precipitous change are themes at the heart of Sophocles’s tragic vision. They are nowhere elaborated with more urgency than in “Women of Trachis.” There are no subtle shifts of fortune’s favors in this tragedy, only stunning and total reversals — a relentless spinning of her fickle wheel. Thesis moves to crushing antithesis with an unparalleled violence at the moment of transformation. Javen Tanner adapted and directed this production of “Women of Trachis,” which features an American translation by the poet C.K. Williams and classicist Greg Dickerson. Spencer Brown created the set design with costumes by Andrea Davenport. The production uses character and neutral masks to inform the movement of the piece, and medieval-inspired costumes and music further set the tone. An orientation discussion by dramaturge Jim Svendsen will precede every show by 30 minutes. The production will tour the state of Utah after it opens at Westminster College. The schedule is as follows: Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m., Weber State University’s Wildcat Theater in Ogden Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m., Utah Cultural Celebration Center Amphitheater in West Valley City Sept. 24 at 5:00 p.m., Brigham Young University’s de Jong Concert Hall in Provo Westminster is a private, independent and comprehensive college in Salt Lake City.
