KUTV reports two separate wildfires of 600 acres each and two miles apart raged near Strawberry Reservoir about 80 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. By Sunday evening the winds died down, enabling fire crews to make progress fighting the flames. The U.S. Forest Service said one of the fires was the biggest threat in a popular hunting area. Hunting camps and camping trailers were being evacuated from the area. The TV station reported that officials believe both fires could be human caused but no official cause has been determined. It is not yet clear if the fires are related. Utah wildfires still burning, but crews hopeful SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Authorities say two Utah wildfires are still burning south of Salt Lake City, but a favorable weather forecast should help firefighters get the upper hand. U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Kathy Jo Pollock said Monday that evacuation orders remain in place for deer hunters and cabin owners near Strawberry Reservoir, about 80 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. One fire has burned about 600 acres, and the other has torched 200 acres. Pollock says each fire has forced about 25 people to evacuate. She says both are zero percent contained, but the outlook is good because winds are predicted to die down and the fires are burning light fuels like grass and brush. Investigators are probing what caused the fires and if they are related. Audit: Utah spent more than $80 million on homelessness SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A legislative audit says Utah’s spending on homelessness has grown by nearly $20 million over the past two years. The legislative auditor general’s report, which was released last week, states Utah spent roughly $81.2 million on direct and indirect costs for federal, state, county and city homeless services and programs in 2016. That’s an increase from $71.5 million in 2015 and $63.6 million in 2014. That does not factor in the estimated $67 million the state expects to spend on Operation Rio Grande over the next two years. The report says indirect costs – spending on programs such as policing and jails that would exist otherwise but are inflated by homelessness – accounted for $40.8 million in the most recent fiscal year studied. Salt Lake couple charged in death of newborn boy WEST JORDAN, Utah (AP) – A Salt Lake City-area woman and her boyfriend are charged in the death of the woman’s newborn son. Arrest warrants issued Friday in 3rd District Court charge 26-year-old Maria Elena Sullivan and 21-year-old Dylan James Kitzmiller with murder and child abuse in the death of the 13-day-old boy. Court documents say the boy was born Sept. 4 with no known medical problem but that emergency personnel called to the house Sept. 17 saw multiple bruises on the child who grunted and gasped before he stopped breathing. An autopsy revealed an injured and swollen brain, a fractured arm, a broken rib, a spinal cord injury and a 14 percent weight loss since birth. Judge serves eviction notice on pregnant mom’s unborn baby PROVO (AP) – A Utah mom powering through her final days of pregnancy gave her baby an eviction notice and made it official with a judge’s signature. Incredibly, the baby obeyed. The Daily Herald reports Kaylee Bays was pregnant with her third child, a girl, and thought she was going into labor last Monday, but it stopped. She went back to work Tuesday to her job as a judicial assistant at the Fourth District Court in Provo, and jokingly asked Judge Lynn Davis to serve an eviction notice on her baby. It worked, and less than 12 hours later, baby Gretsel was born. Bays says Judge Davis gladly signed the eviction notice, telling her it was his first eviction notice for a baby in his 31 years as a judge. Come See us at Park East! and So Much More!
