Show The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, July 1-4, 2017 Smith ready for her Kimball Art Center gig painting and drawing. “While I had a well-rounded arts background, it was really the molding of three-dimensional objects that was so exciting to me,” she said. Although Smith loved art, she changed majors and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature. The new executive director is honored for the opportunity By SCOTT IWASAKI The Park Record Lindsie Smith remembers what she felt when she was asked to become the new executive director of the Kimball Art Center. “I was so thrilled when the board of directors offered me this opportunity,” Smith said during an interview with The Park Record. “It was exciting and wonderful to be asked to lead this wonderful organization.” Wyoming-native Smith, who will come to the Kimball Art Center -- known as the KAC by local residents -- from her time as associate director of the Clark Planetarium, is no stranger to the arts. She attended the University of Wyoming on a ceramics scholarship. “I loved getting my hands in the clay,” she said. “I loved working with it and shaping things.” In addition to ceramics, Smith studied other visual arts disciplines, including watercolors, I’m excited to work with Park City and the wider community to bring the Kimball Art Center to the next level...” PANIC BUTTON MEDIA Lindsie Smith is the Kimball Art Center's new executive director. “The reason why was I didn’t think I was good enough to pursue a career in ceramics,” she said. “I think it was Picasso who said, ‘All children are artists and the problem is remaining one once you grow up.’” People’s denial of an innate artistic inheritance is one reason Smith loves the Kimball Art Center’s mission, which is to connect and inspire through art. “The Kimball Art Center helps instill that self-esteem and confidence, especially in those who take art classes,” Smith said. “I wish I had a little more of that in my art career, and I wish I could have felt like I could have made it.” After deciding she wasn’t going to be an artist, Smith asked herself about other interests she had. “Literature was the other thing that really resonated with me, so I went with that,” she said. Paris Pruden. “Nancy is an award-winning artist from Houston, and her specialty is plein air and oils,” Scudder said. “She comes out to Park City every summer and has taught with us for the past two years.” Pruden will teach two workshops. The first is titled Plein Aire in Oils Workshop I, and it will run July 6-9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “It’s for beginners, and there will be instructional materials and instructions,” Scudder said. “The class will go to different places in town and learn about composition, color mixing, atmospheric perspective, edges and value. It’s basically all the landscape and oils. “I took Nancy on a tour and showed her how much open land and open space where people can bring a small sketch book or big canvas and go wild.” Pruden will also teach Plein Aire in Oils Workshop II July 28-30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop is open to all levels of experienced artists who want to expand their knowledge. In case inclement weather occurs, the workshop will be moved inside to the Kimball Art Center and photos will be provided. “Plein air, to me, is the perfect type of painting for the summer,” Scudder said. “I think of our visitors who are maybe not into recreation. This is a great Lindsie Smith Kimball Art Center executive director After graduation, Smith made another shift and began her career in the finance industry, working for both Zions Bank and Fidelity Investments. “It was a sort of pragmatism that led me there,” she said. “I was a good writer, and I wanted to find jobs where I could write. So, ending up in a marketing department where I was doing some copyediting and technical writing seemed to fit with my background.” C-5 PUZZLE ANSWERS S P R A Y P O I S E E L F I N F A S T S O T H E R U S E R S D I S C E N Y A T E M P V A M O G O T O B E N A L A T M I R A C E R O N L O N C E O C H A N T R CO RN E R E A D E A T H K M A S K N A T I E S S E O X P T A A P TO MA TO L O U N C N A V E E G E T A N G I L T I M E S E E S C L O G S S L Y F O X R O T B Y E S A N A U O V T P O H O R N O S O R A B B KA LE I L M O O T O O R T N A L A D O N L E A N E M I G Y C I O N S K I S L E S H A S A T A M E N U R E N E C R E D I I T D O O R B R A N D O N O K E D O V N I S L BE ET L L S A T N S C O A V B A A L L CH IV ES T E C S T O I O R S M OK RA O O I L P O T R T E N E A I N S C E Y E A T E G E L U N K E O P A L R I S K A C T S P A N A M C R E T E S E D E R T I D A L S N A R L A G N E S Please see Smith, C-11 KAC’s Visiting Artist workshops continue Classes will run through August at Kimball Art Center By SCOTT IWASAKI The Park Record The Kimball Art Center will continue its Summer Visiting Artist Series workshops next week, said Jocelyn Scudder, education department manager.
