According to a press release, graduating seniors Avery Israel, Albany Miller and Juan Suarez are this year’s recipients of the annual scholarship. Marcy Abate, chair of the scholarship selection committee, said in the release that the foundation was inspired by the students’ accomplishments, both in and out of the classroom. The scholarship, established in 2014, rewards students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math who have had to overcome learning challenges. The deadline to apply for next year’s awards is March 15. More information is available at parkcitycf.org/morelli/. TMJH HAS COMMUNITY COUNCIL OPENINGS The Treasure Mountain Junior High School is looking for parents to fill three openings on its community council, which meets about eight times a year and is tasked with establishing school goals and managing the school’s state land trust program. According to a newsletter, nomination forms can be found on the community council tab of the school’s website, tmjh.pcschools. us. Self-nominations are welcome. Nominations must be delivered to the school’s principal, Emily Sutherland, by June 9. SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT GENERATES BUZZ, A-10 www.parkrecord.com WED/THURS/FRI, MAY 31-JUNE 2, 2017 Class of 2017 pledges to seize opportunities Graduates say they’re excited for challenges that await in future By BUBBA BROWN The Park Record When Broughton Flygare strolled down the track circling the South Summit High School football field and pivoted to take his seat alongside his fellow graduates at the center of the turf, he was thinking about what comes next. “I’m excited to get into the real world and start heading where I want to go in life,” he said shortly before the school’s commencement ceremony on May 25. “I can’t wait to get into career options and that stuff. It’s exciting.” By all accounts, South Summit’s Class of 2017 -- comprising 91 graduates -- is well equipped to begin their voyage into the real world. But while some, like Flygare, wanted to look forward during one of the most important evenings of their school careers, others recalled the memories they were preparing to leave behind. During a speech to the crowd during the ceremony, Abigayle Petty described how she had been impatient for graduation throughout the school year. Now that it had arrived, though, she felt a tinge of sadness. Petty became emotional during her speech, apologizing frequently, but laughed it off while reminiscing about fond memories with her friends. “It means leaving friends who inspire me and teachers who helped me and taught me so much,” she said, fighting back tears. They presented their ideas to committee designing new school By BUBBA BROWN The Park Record The Park City School District is in the middle of developing a new school for fifth- and sixth-graders, and recently a new group of experts joined the process: students who were that age not too long ago. Over the last few months, groups of seventh-graders at Ecker Hill Middle School were tasked in their CTE (career and technical education) classes with producing their own visions for what TO EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS? the Class of 2017 well enough that the students will flourish as they enter the Please see South Summit, A-11 a perfect early middle school would look like. Each group was required to poll more than 100 of their classmates, then use the results to design the details of the school’s architecture; select a location based on traffic impacts and other factors; create bell schedules and school policies; develop a curriculum; and make food menus for each day of the week. But the assignment was not purely academic. Several of the top groups recently presented portions of their projects to the district committee charged with designing the actual school. Trip Marshall, a CTE teacher at Ecker Hill, said the committee may even implement a few of the students’ ideas in the final design.
