The Park Record The Park City High School boys’ soccer team is hoping to jump to the top of Region 10 this season. To accomplish its goal, the team needs to take care of business against Stansbury High School, the defending region champion. Its players did so on Friday when they played against the Stansbury Stallions in what was the first of two matches scheduled for the 2017 season. “We knew this was going to be, maybe, the top competition in our region,” Park City’s Head Coach Tom Merchant said. After the first half, the Stallions held the early advantage with a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. But thanks to three second-half scores, including two from junior Paco Jaurrieta, the Miners held on for the 3-2 win over Stansbury at Dozier Field. Playing in his first contest of the season, Park City’s Jaurrieta took advantage of some Stansbury miscues as the forward looked to score in the second half. Both Juarrieta’s goals came via penalty kicks after he was fouled by the Stansbury back line inside the confines of the penalty box. The junior also played a foot in the team’s final score of the game with an assist to Jacob Montiel. Park City High School’s Paco Jaurrieta (55) attempts to maneuver around the defense during the Miners’ 3-2 win over Stansbury on Friday afternoon. Jaurrieta scored two goals in the victory at Dozier Field. “I think he’s going to be a big impact player, but time will tell,” Merchant said of Jaurrieta. Merchant believes the penalties that led to Jaurrieta’s goals, along with others throughout the game, were rooted from Stansbury’s game plan to play aggressive. The Stallions, however, were slightly over-aggressive -- even chippy at times -- which ultimately led to their demise. Even though the Park City team dominated Stansbury, the Miners’ head coach believes his players need to be more disciplined. “The referees had to start calling it tighter and tighter because of the difficulty of the match,” Merchant said. “They had a penalty called on them late in the game, so I don’t know that their tactic paid off for them. But we need to be able to be more emotionally mature. We will talk about it.” While one player did most of the damage on Friday, Merchant believes Park City’s strength moving forward is its depth. “Our benefit is that we’re a really deep team,” Merchant said. “We have a large squad and I can put any of the players on the bench on the field.” Even if the Miners continue to get better, not much will change in terms of their current region standing. Right now, Park City is in sole possession of the top spot of Region 10 at 2-0. It is the only team of the group that hasn’t registered a region loss in the young season. The Miners are certainly excited about where they sit, but Merchant wants his team to stay hungry. “I’m feeling hopeful,” Merchant said. “[Saying I’m feeling] good would be too complacent. But I’m feeling hopeful.” The Miners will next hit the road to St. George for a couple of games against teams from Region 9. The team is first scheduled to play Dixie on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The plan is to then face Pine View the next morning, with a scheduled kickoff for 10 a.m. include ping pong, gaga ball, the basketball gym, teen area and more.
