Show The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, March 18-21, 2017 Mezzo soprano is picked as the musician’s choice Libby Gardner Hall hosts Salt Lake Symphony Submitted by the Salt Lake Symphony Ever wonder what musicians would choose if they programmed a concert? Come see the Salt Lake Symphony’s March concert: Musicians’ Choice! The Salt Lake Symphony will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 at Libby Gardner Concert Hall on President’s Circle on the University of Utah campus. Led by music director/conductor Robert Baldwin, the orchestra will perform a concert of music chosen by members. Baldwin will present a free pre-concert discussion from 6:15-7 p.m. prior to the concert. The talk, held in room 270 of Libby Gardner Hall, will focus on the cultural and historical backgrounds of each musical selection. Mezzo-soprano Gretchen Windt will join the orchestra as soloist. From Haydn’s ebullient and rarely heard Symphony No. 99, to DeFalla’s energetic dances from the "Three-Cornered Hat," the SLS musicians will transport you into a realm of sound with exciting textures, buoyant rhythms and memorable melodies. "The Silver Fanfare" kicks off the program. It’s the debut of music by American composer Peter Boyer with the orchestra, and is filled with a full orchestral sound inspired by the biggest Hollywood studio orchestras. Mezzo-soprano soloist Gretchen Windt will join the orchestra on "The Three-Cornered Hat" and will perform two arias from Bizet’s Carmen, “Habenera” and “Seguedilla.” Originally from Chicago, Windt has performed in operas and oratorios throughout the country.
