Vail custom-made park features that honor the local national champion skier Sam Jackenthal, who passed away in 2015 from a training crash in Australia. On Tuesday, two of the pieces were set up, including a rainbow rail that was decorated with Sam’s enlarged hand prints, surrounded by the hand prints of family, friends and teammates. The rail also says, “I Ride For Sam,” on it. On Thursday, family, friends and teammates gathered at Park City Mountain Resort to unveil the other three park rails. Two of these rails included a digitized caricature of Sam’s face, while the third rail was used for ceremonial purposes, as Sam’s father, Ron, and each of his teammates performed a trick off of the new rail. Additionally, each of the new rails are blue, Sam’s favorite color. The rest of the park features on the mountain are green. “Park City Mountain and Vail did an amazing thing,” Ron Jackenthal said. “It’s great that they’ve kept Sam in their hearts. Now there’s something fairly permanent that will always be on the mountain.” Get info, scores, play-by-play updates for Park City, North and South Summit high schools.
