A centerpiece for Utah’s holiday festivities, “The Nutcracker” returns, December 2-26 for 26 matinee and evening performances at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre. The moving score by Tchaikovsky, magical costumes, brilliant choreography and fairytale sets combine to create a visually stunning production of “The Nutcracker;” underlining why The New York Times’ principal dance critic called Ballet West’s The Nutcracker, “one of the best productions I’ve ever seen.” Ballet West’s 61st Season of “The Nutcracker” will be a retirement party—of sorts—for the longest running production in America. In what is being billed as an “end of an era,” Ballet West will retire the current physical production at the end of December to make way for new sets, costumes, and special effects in 2017. Willam Christensen’s iconic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s score will return in the new production completely intact and with no changes. This will be the fifth incarnation of Willam Christensen’s “The Nutcracker” production, and the first without his oversight. While in remarkably good condition, (due to constant, and costly upkeep), the current sets and many costumes are from an update almost 30 years ago. To celebrate the history of “The Nutcracker” and give audiences a glimpse at the future production, the Company is curating “‘Nutcracker’ Memories,” a free exhibit that will take over the Capitol Room in the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre. Patrons will learn about this incredible cultural COURTESY OF BALLET WEST Zoila Vazques, a Zions Bank teller in Park City, stands by one of the Ballet West costume tour exhibits of “The Nutcracker.” There are four displays that are set up in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Provo. treasure and see behind-thescenes sketches from the new production. Ticket prices range from $20 to $88, and are available online at www.balletwest.org, or may be purchased by calling (801) 869-6920. Sales are already at record levels, so patrons are encouraged to purchase their seats without delay. Immediately following each matinee at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre (except Dec. 24), Ballet West will host on-stage Sugar Plum Parties for children. During the parties, young members of the audience can join the Sugar Plum Fairy and other favorite characters from the ballet for refreshments and a special treat. Tickets are $11 a person, and are available by calling the Ballet West Ticket Office at 801-869-6920. To start the holiday season right, Zions Bank is offering guests visions of sugar plum fairies in select bank lobbies this winter as it spotlights the rich detail and intricate designs of Ballet West’s “Nutcracker” costumes. The limited engagement exhibit will be on display concurrently through Dec. 30 at four Zions Bank locations: • Park City Financial Center: 1100 Snow Creek Drive • Salt Lake City Head Office: 100 S. Main Street • Ogden Financial Center: 2302 Washington Blvd. • Provo Financial Center: 180 N. University Ave. “Zions Bank is a wonderful supporter of Ballet West. They have a long history and passion for the arts in Utah, and have always been particularly supportive of our Company,” said CEO and Artistic Director Adam Sklute. “This is a unique and wonderful opportunity that will allow us to reach new audiences as customers will be able to see first-hand and up-close the artistry of their hometown ballet company.” What many Utah residents may not know is the international acclaim given to Ballet West’s Costume Production Director, David Heuvel. A long-time member of Ballet West, Heuvel has won many awards, and his work has been featured in film and television, most recently in Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” video, watched over a half-billion times online. Heuvel has a team of four who personally make every costume shown in a Ballet West production. In an average year, that equates to hundreds of costumes individually stitched and tailored to fit dancers. “Zions Bank is a proud supporter of Ballet West and the arts in Utah,” said Scott Anderson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Zions Bank. “The arts and business are not necessarily polar opposites. Both test the envelope of human creativity, intellect, energy and promise. Both seek to motivate, to produce, to achieve excellence, to grow and to unite. We are proud to offer this unique educational opportunity for those coming into our bank branches.” The exhibit will be located in the bank lobbies and is free and open to the public.
