The event is organized by the National Ballet of Cuba on a bi-annual basis and Ballet West will join a distinguished group of companies who have performed at the festival in the past, including London Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, and Paris Opera Ballet. The cost of the tour has been generously underwritten by the Quinney and Lawson families who are longtime supporters of Ballet West. “This is a truly wonderful and exciting honor for Ballet West,” said CEO and Artistic Director Adam Sklute. “In spite of the commercial and economic embargo by the United States, the arts, and in particular, ballet continued to thrive in Cuba. “In this vibrant country, ballet training and dancers are legendary in the world of dance,” Sklute continued. “Politicians speak of increased trading of commodities between our countries. It is my opinion that the sharing of our art forms will lead to a better understanding of each other’s culture and people, and to a healthier long term relationship.” Fonte’s “Presto,” an edgy and passionate quartet he created on Ballet West in 2012, will feature Principal Dancer Katherine Lawrence, First Soloists Jacqueline Straughan and Adrian Fry and Soloist Alexander MacFarlan. Balanchine’s “Rubies” is part of a three-act program, “Jewels,” which was created in 1967. The pas de deux will be danced by Principal Dancers Beckanne Sisk and Christopher Ruud, giving them the honor of becoming Performance will include 'Presto' and 'Rubies' The International Ballet Festival of Havana, one of the oldest and most prestigious events in the world of dance, has invited Ballet West to perform at its gala, on Sunday, Nov. 6. The R.E.A.D. program is one of the ways the Summit County Library has adjusted to keep up with the times, Nilsson said. “I do think libraries have shifted in the past 10 to 20 years, so they aren’t very quiet anymore — in a good way,” she said with a laugh. “We try to do community outreach programs. Of course we try to connect the community to literature. “We have a Book to Film program, but in our Coalville Branch we have a knitting group that meets regularly,” Nilsson said. “I think these programs are our way of trying to stay relevant in the digital era. I hear people say books are going away because they can now be read digitally, but that doesn’t mean libraries are going away.” The R.E.A.D. program was originally scheduled just through the summer, but Nilsson is hoping it can continue in the fall. “As long as we can get at least one person do this on a regular basis, we can get others to latch on afterwards,” she said. The Summit County Library Kimball Junction Branch, 1885 W. Ute Blvd., will host an Intermountain Therapy Animals R.E.A.D.
