One of the most iconic trails in that system is the Mid Mountain Trail, which will host the annual Mid Mountain Marathon on Saturday morning. Runners will make their way along the scenic trail, traversing Deer Valley and Park City Mountain en route to the finish area at Canyons. Steve Cuttitta, a Park City High School teacher and crosscountry coach who will participate in the event for the eighth time, said the trail marathon is something he looks forward to every year. “I like the trail,” he said. “Now that I’ve done it enough times, it’s something I put on my schedule at the beginning of the year. It’s nice to do the local marathon.” Cuttitta said seeing familiar faces at the starting line and in the finish area at Canyons adds to the race experience. “Even though we do get some people from around the nation, it’s still very much a local’s race,” he said. “There’s nice camaraderie there.” Once the starting-line niceties are out of the way, though, Cuttitta said the athletes are in for a long race. “It just gets rough when you get to The Colony,” he said. “It gets tough from [mile] 18 to the PARK RECORD FILE PHOTO Noah Brautigam, pictured here, won the 2015 Mid Mountain Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 58 minutes and 36.4 seconds. finish. Usually the sun is coming out and it gets hot, too. They moved the start time up to 7 a.m., though, so hopefully that helps.” However, as the racers approach the finish, Cuttitta said the atmosphere is a little more festive. “I like the finish at Canyons,” To include an upcoming sports event in the calendar, please send an email to Joe Lair at scoreboard@parkrecord.com. Cuttitta said he’s excited to have returning state competitors like Liza Greene, Sydney Oraskovich and Daisy Townsend on the team again, which will add depth. On the boys’ side, the Miners were dealt an early blow this season when Nate Hall, expected to be one of the team’s top runners, broke his collarbone. That’s the goal. For the boys, to be in the top 10 and improve on last year’s finish, that’s a relatively attainable goal.” Park City’s home meet, the Park City Invitational, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 30. The race will take place at Round Valley. Guarantee a $609 pass by Monday, Sept. 5 Submitted by Vail Resorts Labor Day signals summer’s end, which is the perfect time for skiers and snowboarders longing for winter to secure the guaranteed lowest price on Utah’s most valuable season pass. Priced at $609 through Monday, Sept. 5, the Epic Local Pass pays for itself in only four days and includes unlimited skiing or riding at Park City Mountain with a just few holiday restrictions. Combined with the free Epic SchoolKids program, giving all Utah elementary school kids five days at Park City Mountain this winter, Utah families can enjoy the very best deal on skiing and snowboarding for a little over $1,200 for an entire family. “Skiing or riding Park City this winter should be on every Utah family’s must-do list,” said Bill Rock, chief operating officer at Park City Mountain. “There is no better outdoor winter activity to experience with your kids, and Epic SchoolKids is making skiing and riding so accessible for families. When you consider the price of other winter activities, and then you weigh the benefits of recreating with your kids, there’s really no comparison.” The Epic SchoolKids Pack is back for another season giving Utah kids the chance to ski or snowboard for free at Park City Mountain. Launched in 2015, Epic SchoolKids is a free program for Utah kindergarteners through fifth graders providing five free days of skiing or snowboarding at Park City Mountain, as well as one free first-timer ski or snowboarding lesson with free equipment rental. Absolutely no purchases are necessary to take advantage of Epic SchoolKids and online registration is now open at www.epicschoolkids.com/utah through Oct. 9. When paired with the Park City 4-Pack, the whole family can enjoy four days at Park City Mountain together for around $600. The value of the pass is more than just access at an attractive price; it’s about the experience, too. Now the largest ski resort in the United States, Park City Mountain poured over $50 million into the resort last season, including lift upgrades, new snowmaking, a new onmountain restaurant and the new Quicksilver Gondola. Continued from B-3 PCHS tennis Nicholas said the doubles teams are all playing well and will continue to work on varying their approach to matches. “We’re certainly working on mixing things up on the doubles court — getting our net players to move around a lot and constantly keeping our opponents guessing,” he said. “That’s a really big focus of ours right now. We’re also focusing on the fundamentals — keeping things basic and going from there.” One advantage the Miners have over last year’s team is leadership and experience, Nicholas said, which has already paid dividends this season. “We’ve got a good chunk of upperclassmen in our doubles lineup and the girls who are in the singles lineup have definitely learned from the last year or last couple of years,” he said. “That experience is definitely translating to better leadership on the team. The camaraderie at practices is great to see. Everyone is supporting each other and it’s a great environment to be in.” This weekend, the Miners are in southern Utah for the St. George Invitational. Nicholas said he’ll be looking for a couple of things over the two-day tourney. “It’s good to see where we’re at fitness-wise,” he said. “We’ll get a lot of matches in over the weekend. It’s also nice to see the southern schools that we don’t normally get to play in our regular schedule. Down there, it’s 3A, 4A and 5A schools, so it’s good competition.” Park City’s next home match is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 15, against Stansbury. The match will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the PC MARC. |
