Their names: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. For Americans, gaiety turned to mourning. Each eventually became foreign minister, Vice President, and President. While they differed strongly in later years, both fought unswervingly for the principles they helped formulate in 1776. With old age came reconciliation. Both wrote regretfully that advanced years prevented them from visiting each other (Adams was 91, Jefferson 83), but they looked forward eagerly to the great celebration their fellow Americans were planning for the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
