AUGUST 29 A five-ce- per meal increase in cost of school lunches in Jordan School District this year, was voted by the Jordan school board. Mike Anezinis, 62, died August 25 in a Salt Lake hospital after a stroke. A Copperton man, A 2c Keran Keith Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs Eldon Johnson, was a member of the four man team from Forbes AFB, Kans., who took first place in a World Wide Air Police Sharp-shooter Pistol contest held at Off-u- tt AFB, Nebr., July 30. Mrs. Colleen Hatt Montoya, 28, Kearns, former Bingham resident, died August 23. Teaching assignments for Jordan School District for 1958-5- 9 were released. School starts Sept. 2. SEPTEMBER 5 According to the annual finan-cial statement of receipts and dis-bursements of Jordan School Dis-trict, a total of $5,886,536.29 was expended during the school year 1957-58- . Receipts were listed as $9,167,236.52. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Timothy, Murray, former Bingham residents for many years, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sept. 6. SEPTEMBER 12 Bingham High School student body officers for 1958-5- 9 are: pre-sident, Bob Davis; vice president, Kathy Bone; secretary, Mariroie Sax; business manager, Bill Kidder; yearbook editor, Jane DeGraffen-ried- ; editor, Judy O'Keefe and cheerleader, Betty Zdunich. A complete job description re-port on all non-certifi- employees of Jordan School District has been submitted to the board of educa-tion for evaluation. Kennecott's Utah Copper Divis-ion announced that Western Con-tracting Corp. of Sioux City, Iowa has been awarded a contract for the removal of 6,000,000 yards of waste overburden from the upper levels on the east and west sides of the Division's Bingham mine. The stripping, Including related work by the Division, will cost $5,000,-00- 0. SEPTEMBER 19 The Lark safety first team, spon-sored by U.S.S.R. and M. Company placed second in the safety first competition held Wednesday at the State Fair in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Riuben Fresquez Sanchez, 60, died Sept. 6 of cancer. Married in Torrence, Calif., on July 12 were Miss Kaye Abplanalp of Lark who has been residing in Redondo Beach, and John H. Ard. AUGUST 1 Various revisions in domestic' postage rates announced recently, went into effect August I. First class letters needed 4c postage in-stead of 3c, post and postal cards went from 2 to 3 cents and other postage went up accordingly. Carr Fork Grocery located at 25 Carr Fork closed its doors on July 31. Glen L. (Continued from last week) MAY 2 Plans to install dial telephone service in the Bingham Canyon ex-change were announced by J. R. Warburlon, manager for Mountain States Telephone Co. It is estima-ted the cost of the project will ex-ceed $150,000. Preliminary work on the new system is underway. Bingham High School's delegate to the Nth annual Rotary Youth Conference, sponsored by the Salt Lake City Rotary Club, Horry Pappasideris was one of the ten outstanding Utah high school sen-iors selected who were awarded Rotary Club tuition scholarships to the University of Utah. There were 77 youth conference delegates in attendance coming from all parts of the state. A program and dance highlight-ed the May 5th celebration held May 3 sponsored by the Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana, Miguel Ale-ma- n of Bingham Canyon. A Bingham High senior, Andy Trujillo, was one of the two senior students named winners of Deseret News scholarships in the 1958 Sportswriters and Photographers Clinic held in Salt Lake City. James T. (Jim) Vickers, 73, died at his home in Minneapolis, Minn., April 23. New dial service has augmenteJ the manuel board telephone facili-ties at Kennecott's Utah Copper Division Mines Plant. The new sys-tem allows individual personnel to dial other personnel within their plant directly. It also permits switch board operators at the Bingham mine and the mills to dial individ-ual personnel in the company s Salt Lake City office. All four divisions of Kennecott Copper Corp., located in Utah, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico will begin a four-da- y operating schedule effective during the first two weeks of May, was announced. Mrs. Emma Bertha Lohmann (Theororacopoulos) Theodoll, 72, died Sunday at her home in Lark of a heart attack. Kay Beckstead, senior student nt Bingham High School, is one of 12 winners from more than six hund-red contestants for a scholarship at Stevens Henager School of Busi-ness. Mrs. Mildred Hadley of Midvale and Roy Pratt of Orem, formerly of Bingham, were married April 19 at Provo. Mrs. Peter Nielsen was installed president of the Bingham Central for the coming school year. MAY 9 Peter Wallace (Wally) Peterson. 66, of Lark, passed awoy May 1st in a Salt Lake hospital after a brief illness. Requiem Mass for Mrs. Eliza Re-b- Trujillo, 47, who died May 1st in a Salt Lake hospital, was held May 5. "Remember This Night" is theme of the graduation exercises for the Copperton LDS Seminary to be held in the Copperton LDS Ward chapel on May 5. Ground was broken Monday for the new telephone dial building to be constructed at Copperton. MAY 23 "We Grasp the Torch" was the theme of Bingham High School graduation exercises held May 21 jin the school auditorium for 70 graduating seniors. Seven student speakers Andy Trujillo, Connie B. Fike, Marie Lovat, Dee Laycock, Sharon Porter, Harry Pappasideris and Ann Marie Sybrowsky, carried jout the commencement theme in their talks. Bingham Junior High promotion exercises were held in the high school auditorium last night with the general theme "we Launch Our Ships of Life". Frederick C. Green, assistant general manager of the Utah Cop-- I per Division of Kennecott Copper Corp. has been appointed general manager, succeeding L, Fern Pett, who retired April 30, it was an-nounced. This year's six Utah high school seniors selected to receive college scholarships as dependents of Kennecott Copper Corp. employees were announced as follows: Anne Shirley Linde, South High; Sharilyn Clement, Hugh B. Hales and Rich-ard W. Sadler, Cyprus High; Glen E. Davies, Murray High, and Geo-rge G, Saltas, Bingham High. Wilford H. Harris was elected president of the Lions Club for 1958 59, succeeding F. C. Oswald. Ira K. Hearn Jr. has been ap-pointed assistant general manager of the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corp. Formerly chief industrial engineer of the company's Western Mining Divis-ions, he succeeds F. C. Green who was promoted to general manager. Lions Club held their annual athletic banquet honoring Bingham High School lettermen in sports at the Civic Center May 15. Approxi-mately 85 members and guests were in attendance. MAY 30 James Jimas, 69, well known Bingham drug store operator and businessman, died May 25 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Athena Jones, Copperton, following a cor-onary thrombosis. Sterling H. Skinner, 63, Copper-ton- , died in a Salt Lake hospital of natural causes May 24. Wright Sheldon was elected president of Lark Lions Club for the coming year. Alan R. Jager, former junior geologist, has been named general leaching foreman at the Utah Cop-per Division Bingham mine. Charles 1. (Fat) Haynes, 69, succumbed to cancer in a Salt Lake hospital on May 25. Announcement was made that summer classes in higher mathe-matics, chemistry and advanced English will be available this year at Bingham High School for sen-iors and graduates. JUNE 6 32 individual Certificates of Honor have been awarded by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Assn. in recognition of outstanding safety performances of the Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corp Certificates of Honor went to 20 individual employees, various de-partments and plants within the division and to the entire division itself. Heading the list of individual employees receiving Certificates of Honor for having worked more than 40 years without a lost time accident, was Joseph McDonald of Copperton, electric shovel engineer at the mine, who has worked 50 AUliUSl 8 First general meeting of the new West Jordan Junior High was held Monday night with Mrs. Bernice Burkinshaw, president of Jordan District Council, presiding. O. R. (Fat) Warner, 58, of Cop-perton passed away July 31 in a Salt Lake hospital after a linger-ing illness, Theodore J. (Ted) Mastoris, 73, died in a Salt Lake hospital of na-tural causes August 2. Utah Copper Division of Kenne-cott, which operated on a seven-da- y operating week during 1957, cut back to six days in January, to five in March, and to four in May, returned to five days starting Mon-day of this week. Closing programs for Bingham and Copperton summer recreation were announced for August llth and 14th respectively. Mrs. Amy J. Shatter, 63, former Bingham and Copperton resident for many years, died August 6 of natural causes. Addition of two new languages, Russian and German, to the foreign language department at Bingham High School was announced. Marriages of early August were those of Miss Maxine Hiskey of Granger and DelMar Schick on August 2; and Miss Margaret Shar-len- e Foster and Grant L. Pullan on August 6. AUGUST 15 H. E. (Tex) Taylor took over running the service station part of Huntsman Chevrolet Co. last week. The business to be known as Tay-lor's Service. Richard B. Hyland, 54, of Mag-na, former Bingham resident, died of injuries received in a two-ca- r crash August 0 at an intersection one-hal- f mile east of Huntsville. Bingham City adopted a tax levy based on a assessed valu-ation in the city of $3,884,316 for operation of the city next year. The levy is the same as last year. Nearly 30,000 persons, employ-ees and their families, are expect-ed to attend Utah Copper Field Day at Lagoon today as guests of Utah Copper Division of Kenne-cott Copper Corp. AUGUST 22 Mrs. Agnes Carrigan Johnston, 48, of Midvale, former Bingham resident for many years, passed away of a heart ailment Aug. 21. A six-da- y production schedule at all western facilities, including Utah Copper Division of Kenne-cott Copper Corp., will go into effect the first week in September. Miss Sherlene Blanche Roby and JUNE 13 Harry Whitten of Salt Lake City, well known here as having been associated with sports and having worked as manager of the R. C. Gemmell Memorial Club several years, died enroute to a Salt Lake hospital June 10 after a heart at-tack. Married at Salt Lake LDS Tem-ple June 6 were Miss Janell Hansen of West Jordan, and Brent Odell Peterson of Midvale, both formerly of Copperton. Contract for tearing down the Copperfield Elementary School was awarded to Wm. C. Pierce by Jor-dan school District. JUNE 20 Bingham Ward Primary was re-organized as follows: Mrs. Gaya Xanthos, president; Mrs. Eunice Raa Collings, first counselor; Mrs. Donna Bell, second counselor, and Mrs, Alta Sorensen, secretary. Closure of lead smelting opera-tions at the Midvale smelter of U. S. Smelting Refining and Mining Co, due to the depressed lead zinc market was announced this week. Announcement was made that operations of the Utah Copper Di-vision of Kennecott will shut down August 18 in the inauguration of an annual division-wid- e two-wee- k vacation period. Miss Carolyn Ruth Whitaker of Kanosh and H. Dennis McNeely of St. George, formerly of Bingham, were married in the St. George LDS Temple June 13. JUNE 27 Andrew J. (Andy) Jimas, 40, passed away June 24 in a Salt Lake hospital following an undetermined illness. League play in the boys baseball program undertaken by the BDAA for the first time this year, is sche- - duled to get underway next Tues- - day. Seven teams have been lined up to compete in the 9 to 2 year; age group with six teams of I 3 and 14 year boys in the other league. Mrs. Antonia Lovat Tazzer, 62, of Sandy, former Highland Boy resident for many years, died in a Salt Lake hospital June 18 after aj lingering illness. Juvencio (Shorty) Gallegos, 60, died of a heart ailment at a Bing-ham hospital June 25. Salt Lake LDS Temple was set-ting June 20 for the marriage of Miss Edna Burr of Salt Lake City and E Marvin Prigmore. JULY 4 Bingham High School Class of 1928 held its 30th year class re-union at Copperton on June 28, with approximately 49 former class motes and partners, coming from far and near to attend the affair. This was the class' first reunion. Jordan School District Board of Education approved a $3,629,150 budget for operation and mainten-ance of schools during 1958-5- 9 after a public hearing. The amount represents an increase of $197,900 over last year, JULY 11 Closing the middle of this month of the Bingham-Evan- s Drug, after serving this area for some 30 years, was announced. Mrs. Mary Ellen Caulfield, 70, of Salt Lake City, former longtime Bingham resident, passed away in a Salt Lake hospital July 9 after a lingering illness. Bert Serassio Sr., 78, of Lark, died in a Salt Lake hospital of causes incident to age July 6. Mrs. Anna Hull, former Bing-ham resident, passed away July 7 at Whittier, Calif. Miss Dyca Dea Hiskey of Gran-ger became the bride of Don J. Gust of Copperton on June 27. JULY 18 Gregory L. Hatch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hatch of Cop-perton, who became tangled in a ' clothesline rope, was accidently hanged in the garage at his home July 13. Bingham High School Class of 1949 scheduled a canyon party re-- j union at North Storm Mountain in Mrs. W. Russell Anderson was installed president of the Copper-to- n Study Guild for the 1958-5- 9 club year. MAY 16 Bill Hcnnings was elected com-mander of American Legion Post No. 30. Gilbert E. Strand, 40, died May I I in a Salt Lake hospital after a heart attack. Myles (Myley) Anderson, 42, passed away at his home in Cop-perton Sunday morning, May II, after a heart attack. Mrs. R. C. Stevenson was install-ed president of the Bingham Wo-men's Civic Club, succeeding Mrs. R. G. Steele. Miss Annette Marjorie Johnson and Pete George Niksich of Mid- - vale, formerly of Bingham, were married May 0. Mr. and Mrs. Augustin Lopez announced the marriage of their daughter, Iris Nelia, to Manuel Martinez. Julian Benavidez, 43, Lark, died! at his home of natural causes May 12. The Assn. was or-ganized 50 years ago in Salt Lake City on Sept. 16, 1908 and the BingKam Fire Department was one of t: . charter departments and has been a dominant force in the asso-ciation to the present day. At the convention in Heeber June 12 thru 14, the Golden Jubilee Year will be observed and Bingham will be honored as a charter department. In addition two of its members R. R. Marriott and Dean Wilcox, are among the five living charter members to be honored.
