Carp currently make up over 90 of Utah Lake's and the literature has shown that removal of 75 of the carp population will allow rooted aquatic vegetation to reestablish, thereby stabilizing bottom substrates, reducing turbidity and reducing phosphorous availability in the lake Additional studies have concluded that 7 to 8 million age-- 2 carp are present in the lake and modeling efforts have determined that a reduction of approximately 5 million pounds of carp annually tor 6 years will achieve the 75 reduction goal even with natural recruitment. The Defeasibilpartment's plan is to conduct a one-yeity effort to remove 5 million pounds of carp mechanically from Utah Lake, have the fish transported and disposed of or marketed by the respondent. Upon successful completion of the pilot effort, full removal would be initiated in 2009. Those interested in parfcipating in this experimental project should include the following specifics in their proposals: - Statement of Qualifications showing expertise and or experience in commercial fishing - Proposed methodology for removing, transporting, disposing or marketing of 5 million pounds of carp from June 2008 through May of 2009 including approved points of takeout - Methodology for reducing catch and minimizing mortality of species - Willingness to allow observers to monitor and document the removal process - Cost required per pound to accomplish removal through marketing Necessary permitting (Certificates of Registration) from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources andor other agencies required to accomplish this proposal Respondents are encouraged to work with other parties in developing a removal strategy and to look at ways to dispose of and or market the fish.
