Rk GKLS BASKETBALL SportligMAsjociated Press NHL ROUNDUP 31 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS OTTAWA There's nothing new about Martin Brodeur being the story in a win for the New Jersey Devils. Arron Asham is a different story. Brodeur made 37 saves Saturday night in the Devils' 2 win over the Ottawa Senators, but it was the two-goperformance by Asham that was the difference maker. "Ash has responded," Devils coach Brent Sutter said.,, "If he's finishing and getting involved it gives him opportunities to get the puck to shoot. He's got a great shot and he hasn't shot the puck enough. Sometimes he gets cute and tries to make the perfect play and gets off track. He just needs to go hard up and down his wing." Zach Parise scored the other goal for the Devils who are just two points behind the Senators for first place in the Eastern Conference. Brodeur collected his 31st win of the season. j fell The Senators behind midway through the game but got a second-periogoal from Jason Spezza and one from Chris Kelly with 7 minutes left in the third period to create a tight finish. Ray Emery made his third start in the last four games for the Senators and had 26 saves. The loss was the third straight for the Senators, who have yet to win since acquiring Cory . Stillman jand Mike Commodore in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes six days ago. "We didn't get off to a good start at all and to give them a lead makes it tough," Senators captain Daniel ALfredsson said. "We came back hard in the last two periods and we had our chances but three goals behind is tough these days." after the The Devils led opening period on a goal that was originally credited to John Madden. Replays showed that Senators captain Daniel directed the puck into his own net as he tried to block a centering pass from Asham. ' Asham added his second goal early in the second period when he moved in over the and wired a Senators blue-lin- e slap shot past Emery. That lead was nearly in- creased to 0 on a Devils' power play, but Parise sent the puck through the crease while facing an open net. Seconds later he had another opportunity at the side of the goal and made no mistake putting the puck up high over Emery. 3-- ), (34-26-- 3-- 0 d 0 . 3-- I Rangers 5, Sabres 1: At New York, Sean Avery scored the first of his two goals 10 seconds in, and Brandon Dubin-sk- y had a goal and two assists for New York, which chased goalie Ryan Miller in the first period and routed Buffalo. Henrik Lundqvist, in his first game since signing a $41.25 million deal with the Rangers, made 29 saves. Thomas Vanek's power-pla- y goal spoiled Lundqvist 's shutout bid with 6:58 remaining. Avery, Ryan Callahan, and Brendan Shanahan did the damage for New York, which leaped over Buffalo in the tight Eastern Conference : playoff race by winning for the seventh time in 1 1 games six-yea- r, ). Mslanders 4, Thrashers 1: At Uniondale, N.Y., Rick DiPietro came up 77 seconds short of a shutout, and the Islanders set franchise records for fewest shots allowed and shot discrepancy. DiPietro needed to stop just nine shots, while the Islanders pelted Kari Lehtonen for 49. DiPietro also added an assist as 12 Islanders recorded a point. Miroslav Satan, Ruslan e Fedotenko, Bergeron and Sean Bergen-heiscored for the Islanders winners of three straight. Atlanta had a three-gam- e winning streak snapped with the loss. Wade Brookbank, Sergei Samsonov, Eric Staal and Trevor Letowski scored for the Hurricanes, whose third straight victory came in their first game since captain Rod Brind'Amour tore a ligament in his left knee, an injury that almost certainly will end his season. Nathan Horton scored two goals, one on a penalty shot, for Florida. Rostislav Olesz and Brett McLean also scored and Stephen Weiss added two assists for the Panthers, who haven't won in Raleigh since Dec. 6, 2002. t Canadiens 1, Flyers 0: At Montreal, Carey Price stopped 34 shots for his first NHL shutout and Andrei Kostitsyn scored a highlight reel goal for Montreal. Price, chosen fifth overall in the 2005 draft, won his second straight start, drawing chants Maw lS I I o of "Carey! Carey!
