Show HERALD DAILY C4 2008 Friday, January 18, BYU FOOTBALL Holmoe Continued from CI announced Nevada was pulling out of the contracted game, five FCS teams called to inquire about a game. sug"People were gestions to me," Holmoe said. "They were telling me about Web sites that had the teams with openings for next year. There were like 30 (FBQ teams on it. We've already contacted those teams and they don't want to play. They may have a game open, but they don't want to play us for our opener." Holmoe said he called MWC Deputy Commissioner Brett Gil- -, liland, who contacted his counterparts at the other 10 IBS conferences, about BYU's Aug. 30 opening, with no success. BYU could have gone on the road to play an FBS opponent, but Holmoe said there was no way he could disrupt the school's revenue stream by having just five home games. There was also the possibility of leaving the Aug. 30 date open and moving another game. In fact, BYU did discuss with UCLA that very proposal. "When we found out we were playing them in the bowl game, it was disheartening," Holmoe said. "We would be playing UCLA three times in - .V.,.'' t , . -- ill'. ,r' . it i FILE Rress and PHOTOSAssociated Daily Herald teams in the past three years (Eastern Illinois in has played two Football Championships Subdivision (formerly Division 2005, at left and Eastern Washington in 2007, at right) and will play FCS's North Iowa in '08. BYU it's irresponsible to We're playing two Pac-1- 0 teams in 2008 "(UCLA and Washington). It's still a good cluding Nevada. BYU was 17th in the final Sagarin ratings. Mendenhall made some comments late in the 2007 season about "scheduling down" to get BCS access, much like Hawaii did. Holmoe wanted to make it clear that BYU will play anyone, just not to the detriment of one year, and that didn't have the best appeal. We asked them if we could move the game out a year or two. But UCLA didn't want to take on the same problem we had of filling a game at such a late date." ALso, leaving the Aug. ,'30 date open might have resulted in playing an MWC game to begin the season, somethinf Holmoe said BYU did not want to do. BYU settled on Northern Iowa, a good FCS team that had a 2007 Sagarin rating of 62, better than four Mountain West Conference and six Western Athletic Conference teams, in Holmoe said. "But not in the same year. If we play LSU, we're not gonna play Ohio State, Michigan and USC in the same year. We're going to balance it out. We're responsible for growing the program, and pointed BYU would be playing an FCS team at all, and for that matter, why not get out of the MWC? The way the BCS is set schools, going up for undefeated in league play Is pretty much required. BYU did that in 2006 and 2007 but Holmoe knows how difficult that is to do. "Fans are telling me, 'if you can just get by the schedule, you're gonna make it (to the BCS),' " Holmoe said. "Bronco and I are realistic about what we're going up against in the MWC.
