Show DAILY HERALD Wednesday, March 21. 2007 Vouchers Teachers Continued from Al ' If they succeed, the program could be on hold for two years until the 2008 general electioa Many private schools were looking forward to serving more interested families who couldn't afford tuition otherwise. "We just need to do what is right and let the consequence follow," said Susan Morris, Spanish Fork's American Heritage School director. "We have something here that could be the envy of children everywhere." The school offers classes from preschool to sixth grade, curusing a principle-base- d riculum that Morris said goes back to traditional education the nation's Founding Fathers used. concepts are tied into the education at the school "For us, control over curriculum would really be a red flag," Morris said. Utah's universal voucher is the first in the nation to include children from all social classes, LDS-base- equally split between each semester, the report contends that school districts could house more students while building fewer schools. The report says that the average class size could also be reduced from about 25 the to about 18, nation's largest about three more than the national average. "That's one of the problems we face with this," Cox said. Others could arise, too. Students who take Advanced Placement courses take a national exam each year. The proposed schedule could cut into the time students have to prepare for those tests, or it could also extend the amount of time students have to retain that material before the test com mom SPRNGSA I Count on fresh new styles this season low-inco- the Net. Morris believes if more people understood the vouchers there would be less public dissent with the pro- pared to students in other parts of the country. However, the proposed schedule could also create some opportunities. High school students could graduate by as much as two years earlier by taking a full course load all three semesters for two years. Sperry said the proposed change is a radical idea that will need more time to study. The State Board of Education and State Board of Regents are expected to examine the proposal closer throughout the year. an advocate of the proposal and human resource manager for Washington County School District, said the moment that capacity during one semester begins to exceed that of the others, those savings and teacher salaries begin to de- vv IX l gram. "I think it's the fear factor," she said. "When something's new we have a tendency to be scared, but we should fear what will happen if we do nothing for education, and things continue as they are." Some of the concerns with the program Morris has heard include that the vouchers will hurt public schools, not require accountability, and public money should not be spent in the private sector. "Even when you're building a public school, you hire a private contractor," she said. "People using government assistance don't buy groceries from a government grocery store." The law requires private schools to report how voucher dollars are spent, prove teachers meet state approval, and open test results to the state. "The family is the basic unit of government, and it just goes back to letting families decide what's best for them," said Morris. American Heritage School has sponsored a Web site, utahvouchers.com, to help inform families about vouchers. "The voucher can help us in so many ways," said Karen Bohrer, the director and founder of the American Legacy Academy in American Fork. "Even though most of our children here won't be eligible for a voucher, it can still help us improve our programs and get more books." I Brooke Barker is 9 available at &40 B. Only at Macy's.
