C5 HIGH SCHOOL STATE SOFTBALL Springville cruises to easy victory Joseph Simmons HERALD CORRESPONDENT The Springville Red Devils d made a statement in their game against West, rusing past the Panthers 16-- in four innings. "Anytime you begin a state tournament, and the kids come out prepared and execute, regardless of their opponent it's a good day," Springville coach Karl Jensen said. "We're happy with the win, and we know there's a lot of work to do, and we're taking it one game at a first-roun- faced in order. Kirkham had seven strikeouts, and only allowed one hit to even get past the infield, a by West's Courtney Andrews in the top of the fourth. The Red Devils were led by pitcher Kandace Kirkham, who pitched a perfect game, sitting down all 12 batters she Vikings 1 time." 3-- 3-- fly-o- "Kandace has some incredible stuff," Springville coach Karl Jensen said. "She hits her spots, she moves the ball around well, and when she gets ahead of the hitters, it's difficult to take advantage of her. She's just a great pitcher." Kirkham got plenty of support from the Springville bats, as the Red Devils were hot from the get go. After Halli Averett struck out looking to start things off in the bottom of the first, the next three batters got on base, and were sent 0 home on a Brittany McCray double, putting the Red Devils up 0 after the first inning. Despite having a 0 lead, the Red Devils decidedly took over the game in the second inning, in which they batted through the order, and added four more runs. McCray added two more RBI to her stat line, this time with a triple. After adding one more run in the third, Springville's bats got even hotter in the bottom of the fourth. McCray had her third hit of the day, a double, to get things started for the Red Devils, and was sent home by Katelyn Anderson, who hit Springville's third triple of the day.
