Show HERALD DAILY Saturday, March 10, 2007 C5 Drive OSU wins, but BYU scores well in tri-me-et in helping him fight the disease. He still has a long way to go probably a year and a half before he can think about getting back on the football field, but at least that is now a possibility. Long now feels a greater desire to give back. He teamed up with the HOSA club at Lone Peak High School and ARUPto support a blood drive at the MMM WM Jared Hunsaker Continued from CI HERALD COSRESPONDENT The Oregon State Beavers squeaked out win over BYU and Utah State on Friday night in a women's gymnastics meet in the Smith Fieldhouse. Oregon Sate scored 195.375, followed by BYU at 195.125 and Utah State at 194.675. BYU tead with one event to go, 146.650 to 146.425, but the Cougars' floor scores couldn't keep pace with the Beavers' scores on the bars. "It's fun competing against good teams. When you compete against good teams, the scores are higher," said BYU coach Brad Tonight, if we could have been just a tiny bit sharper in those last two events, that would have been the difference between winning and losing." The Cougars came out looking sharp in their first event, as they scored a season-hig- h 49.050 on the vault. BYUs Alethea Boon scored a 9.925 to win the event. Nine players Bryan Kent Joe Semanof f , Zac Sam Doman, Shawn Doman, Vic So'oto, Sete took time Aulai, Harvey Unga and Kellen Fowler out on Friday to support the event. "I knew nun from football," said Unga, who as a senior at Timpview faced Long in the 2004 4A state title game. "And I like helping out. My life is good, so I like giving something to others." Although most of the players couldn't donate because of spring practice, the team members signed memorabilia and Kebl did a live radio interview. "A couple of months ago Ben Criddle and I visited Jason, right when he got back to Utah (Long was diagnosed with cancer while serving an LDS mission)," Kehl explained. "I love being at these things, especially when we're serving people that have no way of serving themselves." Semanoff , who recently had surgery on his shoulder, was the lone player that sat down and gave his own blood. "This was the first time I'd ever done it," he said. "With all the people coming out to support a good cause, I thought it was good for me to do my part." Overall the drive received more than 130 people and totaled up 96 units of blood. While that wasn't as high as the Longs had hoped, they know that every drop is important. "We were shooting for 170 people, but that's still a lot of units that will help a lot of people," said Long. After a solid outing on the beam BYU was leading the team competition BYUs Dayna Smart continued to shine on the beam.
