"The Dirty South" alo continues the band's tradition of creating thematically linked . records. "Southern Rock Opera" examined what it meant to be from the South and the contradictions that come with being raised in the region, all funneled through a story line that touched on the rise and tragic end of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd and what that band meant to rock fans from the South. "Decoration Day" offered tales of personal upheaval that seemed to reflect the strains within the group, which included the wear and tear of nonstop touring and the breakup of two marriages that had preceded the making of the CD. "The Dirty South" doesn't seem as personal, but its songs, many of which depict desperate circumstances that lead people into lives of crime or other misadventure, are often just as evocative and disturbing. Ironically, Hood said he didn't realize "The Dirty South" was so thematically unified until after the CD was finished. "I don't think we really wanted to when we did 'Decoration Day,' for that matter, having done 'Southern Rock Opera.' And yet to me, both of these two records since then have been probably a little tighter conceptually than the 'Rock Opera' itself,' which I guess is just one of those funny ironies." |
