Nationwide Albertsons Boise Open tional are a far cry from BYlTs new digs, giving off a high school vibe. Although the city is continually recognized on surveys as one of the best places to live in America, the historically commuter school is just starting to capture that homey feeling by building two student housing buildings (one for athletes) to house some of the 19,000 students. g In the climate of college sports, where conference shuffling appears to happen every season, Boise State is trying to do everything it can to position itself for a whether it's in bright future the Western Athletic Conference or elsewhere. Boise State appeared to be a viable candidate to join the Mountain West Conference, mainly because of its football success. Ultimately, the eight-teaconference decided tor only add one new school starting in the fall of 2005, Dallas' Texas Christian. MWC officials did not return calls seeking . comment. BSU off icials won't talk about it except to say they arent wholly sure why the snub happened. Three logical guesses are a lack of a large TV market, a low department budget and a small football stadium. The last two could be considered the most detrimental in their bid. With a yearly athletic department budget of about $15 million, Boise State would be ranked among the lowest in the MWC The same is true with football stadium capacity, where 30,000 would rank tied for last with Colorado State. Bleymaier said the school is in the middle of a feasibility study to see the best ways to expand the stadium by as many as 10,000 seats. Talk includes adding to the north end corners or closing the south end to make the stadium look like a horseshoe. The plan is also to build a new press box and two levels of luxury suites. Facilities are outdated by the current standards of other top-2-5 programs. Boise's stadium has all bleacher seating, no suites and a press box with roughly the same space of a mobile home. Even though it wont be part of the MWC any time soon, Bleymaier said he would love 70- 8. 04 O.Thomas Busch Riley 3 5. Powell Jones M White 26 (36) Jimmy Spencer. Chevrolet, 393, $62,415. 27.
