Family Home HERALD CORRESPONDENT For more than six decades, members of The Church of JeSaints sus Christ of Latter-da- y who served missions in New Zealand have been meeting together to renew their friendship and reminisce about their time teaching others about Mormonism. "Aroha," which means "love" in the Maori language, is a reason behind one of the longest-runnin- g mission reunions in the church, said Jack McDonald, ' 56, of Salt Lake City. McDonald sits on the board of presidents for the New Zealand Missionary Society. New Zealand reunions have taken place since the 1930s, during every spring and fall general conference, McDonald said. Any person who has. served a mission in New Zealand is automatically included in the society. While the semiannual general conferences of the LDS church provide a time for spiritual instruction and renewal for members of the faith, the weeks surrounding conference also are a time for many church mission reunions. "The mission reunion is a good time to reminisce and remember those moments," said Jaydene Buh-le- r of Taylorsville, who helps organize a reunion for a mission designated as Southern States Atlanta. Most reunions are organized the by mission presidents church leader in charge of proselytizing in a specific geographic area shortly after their return home, according to McDonald. After a mission president has died, or when missions are consolidated, some form committees to keep reunions going. In this respect, the New Zealand reunions are a bit different. "The New Zealand Missionary Society reunion is unique because it includes missionaries who have served under any mission president, at any ' time," he said. to According McDonald, a typical reunion will have 300 to 400 people in attendance, who range in age from 21 to 91. He added that every past mission president in New Zealand sits on the board of directors for the society. Glen L. Rudd, 86, of Salt Lake City has served in New Zealand as a missionary, a mission president and a temple president. He sits on the board of directors for the society. Rudd is also an emeritus general authority of the LDS church and worked as an administrator with the church welfare program. , "I have attended nearly every reunion since 1940, without a break, the exception being if I was on a mission or traveling," said Rudd, who has been to New Zealand 26 times. He said the society was originally organized under former 3, 1976 --y Joseph Smith's Vision of the Mon V- and a member of the Scriptures Publication Committee announced that a subtitle was being added to the Book of Mormon: 'Another Testament of Jesus Christ" ision of Redemption of . the Dead were accepted as scripture and were later added to the Doc- Oct 3, 1982 Elder roles in the family, warned "that the disln--' tegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities and nations the calamities foretold by ancient land modem prophets; " i Dur- the General Relief Society Session, Presi-- , ing dent Hinckley read for me first time 'The Family: A Proclamation to the World," which, along with offering guidelines for men and women's continued) QUIZ Test your LDS church history knowledge known as the Zion's Maori Association "We now have over 4,000 members of the society on ' record," Rudd said. Others are equally enthusiastic about their reunions. Buhler and her husband, Doug, are both actively involved in the planning of the Southern States Atlanta mission reunion for missionaries who served between 1968 and 1976. The Buhlers served in the mission at the same time. Several years ago, Jaydene Buhler ran into a friend from the mission that she hadn't seen in years. After working to track down some of the other mis-- : sionaries, they formed a committee thk shares the planning of the reunion. "There are over 500 people who served from 1968 to 1976," Buhler said. "It's like playing detective to try and track down where everyone is." Over the years, the members of the committee have developed specialties, such as music or just getting people to come to the reunion. Some committee members live outside of Utah, and they share and alternate responsibilities. "The Southern States mission is one that has changed a number of times," Buhler said. "Its amazing to think that at the time I served, our mission's nearest temple was in Mesa, Arizona."
