You've heard about how ducks fly into the blue turf at Bronco Stadium in Boise, mistaking it for a lake? Nonsense. ESPN's Dan Patrick had public television guru Bill Nye the Science Guy disprove that on his radio show, something about how ducks see colors and sense water. BYU takes aim at the blue turf tonight (ESPN, 8 p.m.) in an attempt to stop what is the hottest college football program in the country in Boise State. Will BYU crash into the blue turf or put everything together for the first time this season? The task is daunting. Mountain West Conference teams will be mainly using this week to face cupcake opponents prior to entering the thick of the league schedule. Montana State, New Mexico State, Utah State and Nevada have all found their way into this week's forecast. , Frosting on the cupcakes, glass of milk at the ready and here's the picks: I 27 BYU Saturday Air Force at Utah (ESPN Plus, 1p.m.) The only MWC game this week features a couple of teams that have had eight of their last 10 meetings decided by a touchdown or less. They're 3 for the first time since 1992 and haven't even held a lead in the last four games, dating back to last season's bowl game. An easy solution: Hang on to the ball Colorado State has turned the ball over 11 times through three games. Opponents have scored nine times seven touchdowns and two field goals resulting in 55 points off those miscues. The Rams have generated three turnovers (an interception, two fumble recoveries) but have not scored following any of those turnovers. They just played for pride. Both teams walked into the stadium in Payson without a victory. The matchup meant the loser would finish the season with a goose egg in the win column for the season. They play the best schedule week in, week out. It has to be hard to keep finding solace, though, when the losses keep coming. BYU will break out of its recent scoring slump and put up more than 10 points. But unless the running game reaches a level far above the current state of pathetic, Boise State will simply have too many chances to score.
