Show Wednesday, September HERALD DAILY 21 2004 C7 Pallas John Archery hunt turns up a big fat zero think I'm fired. Earlier this ' summer, I persuaded my wife to not only purchase an archery deer tag, but an archery elk (any bull) tag as wel After all, what's a few extra dollars when it comes to a sure thing ... right? I guaranteed my wife that I would find her both an elk and a deer during this year's archery hunt. Unfortunately, the nearest we got to the real McCoy was a few fresh tracks and several fresh "piles" of that which comes after tracks. Last Friday marked the close of yet another general archery seasoa The only thing my wife brought back from this year's g grueling hunt was a much man reeking of Pepe' Le Pew cologne who seemed to be having trouble walking because he had one foot on the ground and the other in his mouth. That's right ... we were total-- h I I spent the last four days reviewing my mistakes and bur mishaps during this four-weelong boot camp. In retrospect, I cant help but wonder if our tacmaneuvers tical and stealth-lik- e may have taken us left, when we should have gone right; and when my wife caught movement and yelled "Deer!" I should have stopped, not run. As I continued my investigation into this year's circus of misfortunes, several additional errors came to mind. Why, for example, would any woman follow a crippled old man to four miles, above sea level? Take my word for it: Deer andor elk do not eat, sleep or live here. My decision to hunt the outer edges of our ozone layer was not one of my more brilliant revelations and if not for the two angels who happened by and led us out, my wife would have left me and would be on a beach in Florida. k ' older-lookin- SKUNKED. kind-hearte- d , And I'd still be at a high enough elevation to be sitting next to Neil Armstrong asking about his "One small step for man.'' Continuing my evaluation, it has also been suggested (by you know who) that our hick might have improved if only my elk bugle had not sounded like an d coyote trying to hack up a hair balL Having since admitted that my choice of hunting location was not the best and that there's room for improvement when it comes to calling in the elk, it suddenly hit me that not all has been lost. Prior to the start of this year's hunt, I had promised my wife that by the end of this season she would have at least one mount hanging from the wall. I can only hope that someone remembers to feed me.. Utah hunters can register on the Internet at www.uthip.com or by 107-da- - College football 1 l J bers may be down slightly this year and some of the state's waterfowl management areas may be a little drier when Utah's 2004-0- 5 waterfowl hunting sea- -' son opens Oct. 2. Overall, however, hunters should expect a good hunt. "I'm pretty positive about this upcoming waterfowl season," said Tom Aldrich, waterfowl coordinator for the DWR. "Even though wetland conditions in western Canada were not as good this year as last, and we're in a bit of a drought locally, there's still a tremendous waterfowl resource out there that's in pretty good shape. That's reflected by the fact that hunters y duck can still enjoy a season and a seven duck daily bag limit this year." To be entered in the 2004-0- 5 Utah Cougar Draw, permit applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Oct. 13. Hunters who have a major credit card are encouraged to apply on the DWR's Web site. Hunters who don't have a major credit card must mail in their application. Tutorow also reminds hunters that if they draw a permit for a limited entry cougar permit area, they may not purchase a permit to hunt on a harvest objective cougar permit area. Draw results will be posted by Nov. 17 at DWR offices and the DWR's Web site. & It (801)5384700.
