The drug is erythromycin, which has been on the market for 50 years and is prescribed for everything from strep throat to syphilis. The new study shows the need for continuing research on the safety of older medicines, including how they interact with newer drugs, said researcher Wayne A. Ray, a prof essor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville. Taken alone, erythromycin doubled the very tow risk of sudden cardiac aeatn among patients in the study. In patients taking other drugs . those that increase erythromycin's the concentration in the blood risk of cardiac death was more than five times greater, Ray and ' his colleagues found. That trans- lates to six deaths for every 10,000 people taking erythromycin for the typical two weeks while on the other drugs. This is an unacceptably high risk," Ray said. Nobody realized the magnitude of the problem before, said Dr. Muhamed Saric, a cardiologist and director of the electrocardiology laboratory at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. "It was thought that erythromycin is a generally safe drug." Most heart doctors knew erythromycin atone carried a slight risk because of some individual reports on patient deaths, mostly in DOUQIAS C. This study, in today's New INSIDE ASSOCIATED , Brigham Young University revamped its athletic department Wednesday, saying the move was made to bring the department in line with the mission and values of the university after a monthslong internal review. University officials said the change is not related to recent sexual abuse allegations. BYU Advancement Vice President K. Fred Skousen said during a hastily called news conference that eliminating the positions of the men's and women's athletic directors and merging the j. two departments into one came after BYU received results from an internal review commissioned in May to improve athletics. The contracts for Val Hale, director of men's athletics, and Elaine Michaelis, women's athletics director, ValHale were not renewed, Skousen said. Both were immediately replaced Wednesday by a team of department officials and Skousen, who said a formal search for a new athletic director would not start, for three to six months. Under the new hierarchy, Peter Pilling, Tom Brian Santiago and Janie Penf ield will oversee the school's 21 sports and Elaine Michaelis $20 million budget. They will report to Skousen, the '. school's vice president for advancement. "By having one athletic department, BYU win eliminate any duplication of time and resources, channeling all effort into one cohesive program," Skousen said. This is an important first step in creating a distinctive and exceptional athletic program, with the mission and values of BYU and The Saints.
