Show I BOOK BUZZ Tales of the early FBI ;.' By LAURA WADLEY Find adventure in literature Furst's "Dark is like one of those photographed black and white World War II espionage films equal parts intriguing and poignant, suspense and filled with a fear- - . ful courage. In this story, Eric DeHaan, captain of the Dutch freighter "Noordendam is asked to commit his ship and crew to the Allied cause. Between September 1939 and March 1941 the Allies, and mostly Great Britain, had lost 1,596 merchant vessels to the enemy and were desperate for transport for goods, armaments and commandos. Enter Captain DeHaan and his multinational crew, pretending to be a Spanish ship, sailing with a convoy. They are so loaded with munitions that the engine blows, leaving the "Noordendam" behind as the convoy steams on. As one might imagine, there is much suspense here, but even more compelling is the character of Captain DeHaan and the seemingly casual valor of his shipmates and contacts. And then, of course, there is the sea, with "God's own sweet" foggy North Atlantic salt air. The Deaf Man (who may or may not really be deaf) first ap" peared in McBain's "Mischief , where he was left for dead by his treacherous girlfriend as the book ended. The Deaf Man is fond of anagrams and of Shakespeare and although CareHa, Meyer, Kling and company are intelligent men, close acquaintance with the Bard doesn't generally come with the calling. Yet another crackerjack entry in one of the most distinguished series in detective fiction. David Benioff is just a kid, a thirtysoniething, andyetal-read- y with a sterling resume. Edgar Hoover. Relying on recently opened FBI records, Burrough shows that the agency then more resembled the Keystone Kops than the seemingly (before 911 anyway) omnipotent force it was to become. At the beginning, its agents didn't know how to investigate or even, in many cases, how to shoot guns. In most spectacular ways, the FBI and other law enforcers found themselves over- matched, outwitted, embarrassed and sometimes dead, 'i (Dillinger's escape from jail , using a wooden gun did not crime-fightin- inspire public confidence.)
