Show Continued from Al i be out in the parking lots already grilling out, some will be having a drink. All of us will be having a good " time." "I like this area a lot. But the biggest difference is that in Provo, they love football but dont know how to enjoy the game before it happens. If you're looking for a good time, they'll ask if you want to go check out the school's art gallery." But it's also about telling visitors about Provo." Former president Pete Heinbecker and current treasurer Ken Fakler of the Notre Dame Club of Utah laugh at the Riverside Country Club on Wednesday. publication, Msgr. Francis Mannion Saints, said, "Catholics and Latter-da- y stance and share a pro-lifcooperate to further these values." The Notre Dame Club of Utah even acts as a missionary recruiting students and athletes for an education in a place colder in winter than Utah. Fakler, Heinbecker and others in the group maintain a high profile, willing to pitch their alma mater to anyone who will listen. They often attend high school college nights, setting up tables and preaching Irish virtues. Most of the interest comes from Salt Juan Lake City Catholic schools Diego and Judge Memorial Park City High had five students apply to South Bend last year. Interest is thinner in Utah County, except, perhaps, for graduate school "But for undergradl Mormon kids want to go to BYU," Fakler said. "It's no different than a Catholic kid saying he or she wants to go to Notre Dame. But if we hear a kid is interested in Notre Dame, no matter where they are in the state, we'll go find them." In Utah, Notre Dame lists 223 alumni, 68 parents of alumni or students and 93 friends of the school typically called "subway" alumni. They have no real affiliation except being fans of the school's teams and ideals. There are 211 domestic clubs and 55 international ones that root for the Irish. Utah club president Richard Lobato, who grew up in West Jordan and is now living in Salt Lake after graduating from Notre Dame in 1995, said he'd like to see more Utahns have access to his ahna mater. But with only 1,900 freshman slots available each year, and more applicants than ever making e, "We are thrilled they're coming and would never impose our values and keep them from having a good party,'' BYU guest relations official Ron Clark" said "We never expect any problems because these are professional fans total class. We'll do anything to help them have as good of a time as possible because that's how we're treated when we go there." Fakler, Class of 71, is a member at Riverside and lobbied to allow the Notre Dame dub of Utah to use the parking lot and other areas. He didnt have to work too hard at it. It's a matter of good business as well as guest relations. Riverside's proximity to the stadium makes it a prime location for fun. Notre Dame fans, like pre-gathose at most schools, are known to enjoy a cold one, which means money for Riverside. It expects to offer beer and mixed drinks to a clientele that will actually buy more than local members. As for BYU, officials like Clark rave about the similarities of the schools, how they are the beacons of American universities for their respective faiths. Notre Dame's visit looks good for BYlTs business, too. Besides the influx e of fans, there's a game, that will be broadcast on ESPN, which rakes in the cash (there's that green color again). BYU and the other teams of the Mountain West Conference are $48 million televipart of a seven-yea-r, sion deal with the network. Having Notre Dame on your schedule is a good thing, it seems. Both BYU and Utah Valley merchants know that. Hospital. But no party is bigger than the Saturday afternoon tailgate just minutes from the stadium. Cougars fans, Anyone's invited too and as many as 1,000 are expected to join the revelry at Riverside Country Club, revving engines, stomachs and livers in the parking lot as early as 9 a.m. There'll be cooking and congregating, but it's all just a warm-u- p for the spectacle that belongs to college football. "You'll see people in their RVs ready to enjoy the day," said Ken Fakler, local tire magnate, Notre Dame grad and enthusiastic Catholic booster in the heart of Mormondom. "Notre Dame football isn't just about the game itself. It's about the whole weekend." west." Some BYU fans are a part of the club. They're not double agents, traitors or turncoats. They joined to have access to games the Cougars play in South Bend. Word around the BYU athletic department is that some Notre Dame fans purchased season tickets so that they were guaranteed a seat when the Irish came to town. Now Classy fans Fakler has just one regret: He won't be able to get any club members tee times on the golf course. Other than that, there's not much room for complaints from Irish fans, who will feast on ribs and salmon and wash it down with some local brew hours before heading over to the game, which starts at 7:15 p.m. For those unfit to make the short walk to the stadium from Riverside, BYU will provide buses not necessarily for the inebriated but for elderly fans and kids. Anyone sober enough to get on the right bus is probably welcome, too. BYU doesnt expect any problems on its dry campus.. . that's dedicatioa Fans of the Fighting Irish will feel right at home rooting for a team that has support wherever it ventures. And yes, they'll drink, that is if they can find slippery liquids around here. BYU will do everything to help them have a good time exqept bring the bottle openers. There are a few Notre Dame parties a pep rally in Park City, another celebration at Sundance Resort today. And cheerleaders will visit Utah State featured large flags and white columns reminiscent of the White House. Protesters disrupted the minute speech twice. Bush was forced to stop speaking both times because the crowd shouted both women down, drowning him out too. Bush's criticism of Kerry was measured; he let his vice president and allies batter the Democrat all week. The president calmly ticked off a litany of differences between Kerry and himself, on Medicare reform, health care, education reforms, child tax credits, and the marriage penalty. "You face a choice," the president said "My opponent's polir cies are dramatically different from ours." He said Kerry has leader In an interview in the 1997 St. Anthony Messenger, an ecclesiastical JOSHUA BROWNDaily Herald nia. "This is a good chance for a lot of members to get to see the team play," Heinbecker said. "Aside from playing USC, it normally doesn't come this far Continued from Al Usually they go to SkyBox at Salt Lake's Gateway shopping mall to watch Notre Dame games. Seeing the green and gold on TV isnt exactly difficult, even in these days of mediocre (by Notre Dame standards) footbalL The Irish went 5--7 last year. A 33-1-4 victory against BYU near the end of the season was hardly worth talking about because it came amid miserable circumstances for both proud programs. That game under a lucrative, exclusive contract, like most for the Irish was on NBC BYU was 8 last season. But the Notre Dame dub of Utah has another prize in mind lately, besides bagging BYU on Saturday. It's possible, just possible, that it will find its holy grail here in Zion. The club is mesmerized by BYUs dreaded rival Utah Or, more specifically, by it's coach The Utes, ranked nationally to start head the season, have a second-yea- r coach with Notre Dame connections by the name of Urban Meyer. Meyer was an assistant in South Bend from before leaving for his first 0 head coaching job at Bowling Green. "Oh, he's just a great coach," Hein-becksaid. "And everything Notre Dame would want. He's Catholic. He's got his family. He worked under Lou Take away the Bquor intake and the scoreboard, and youH find that Mormons and Catholics typically root for the same things, says one Catholic We know what you're thinking. You've just read that last quote from a Notre Dame diehard, and it sounds like they're coming to pillage Provo. Batten down the shutters. Roll up the sidewalks.' Dont make eye contact. They are going to come, wearing green which some might say is blue with a streak of yellow. Green and gold everywhere, and especially at LaVeil Edwards Stadium on Saturday. Notre Dame contracted for 5,000 seats, about 3,500 more than a typical opponent (USC will get the same allotment on Sept. 18). The Notre Dame Club of Utah requested and received about 600 tickets. The f Utah boosters hope to help. Reinstated in 1997, the club has won awards from its peers for its recruiting efforts. "We're hoping the club continues to attract prospective students," Lobato To avoid repelling any loose cash that might float by this weekend, many businesses are expected to hkte their "Go Cougars" signs and tone down the trash talk. Heinbecker, Class of '60, smiles at the thought of Meyer leading his schooL He thinks Meyer could remove the lack from the school's luster. Like many increasingly disgruntled fans, Heinbecker is willing to give current coach Tyrone Willingham the first African-America-n head coach at the school a chance to resurrect a program that started strong under him with a 103 record in 2002, his first year, then disintegrated into the blahs. BYU fans should relate. Bringing Meyer back to Notre Dame could once again burnish and brighten the program, restoring the old glory, some say. It could also make things easier on the Cougars.
