Show Friday, May 5, 2000, THE DAILY HERALD, (wwwJ4artthcHerald.com), Theater capsules are condensed 7 BIG RIVER: THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN: (Pioneer V ' Theatre Company, Salt Lake City, through May 13) Strong, sometimes amazingly strong, singing voices make this musical version of Mark Twain's. . classic novel rise above its rather mediocre musical score and turn into something pretty solid. The show's heart is in the right place, and in the .end. one is charmed by its simplicity. B GUN-SH(Salt Lake Acting . $19.50$26.50, Company, through Sunday) Hilariously snippy and play about some their forced interactions with each well as as their separate other, attempts to rebuild their lives. One-lineare plentiful and edgy, and the occasionscenes are kept short ally too short, interrupting the comic momentum, but usually just right. abundant profanity and sexual discussion) , THE MOUSETRAP: (Hale Centre , Theatre West Valley, $12.50$15.50, through Saturday) 581961 $17 $33, B 1 Rather quaint cliche-heav- y Agatha Chnstie mystery in wtiich strangers are trapped together, and one of them may be a killer! It was probably fresh and new when Christie wrote it, but after 50 years, the conventions of the genre seem a little stale. Uneven acting and a lack of suspense in the direction keep the show from being great; we keep watching because we want to see how it ends, and not because of compelling characters or taut action. A young orphaned . girl is sent to live with her reclusive - Page C5 i IHhAihK LUUAL from Provo, Utah uncle and discovers her dead aunt's garden, which proves to have magical powers. Performances are strong, particularly in the singing department, and those who enjoy the show are likely to be moved by s the production; probably will not change their minds. B non-fan- WAIT UNTIL DARK: (Provo Theatre Company, through 379-060- $7.50-$12.5- May 13) Provo Theatre Company has topped itself again with this taut, thrilling masterpiece of atmospheric suspense. A blind woman (played to perfection by Tayva Patch) is terrorized by three who think a toy doll in her apartment contains the drugs they're looking for. Ominous and dark literally, in the final scenes and fabulously creepy in the most fun sense of the word. A s WEDLOCKED: (Little London Dinner Theatre, Pleasant Grove, 785-082$25, through Saturday) Marvin and Laurie Payne play a couple trying to rekindle their marriage in this n musical. Though it's shorter than many shows, it drags in parts, particularly with the old movie Marvin's character keeps trying to watch while his wife is being romantic. The humor is gentle, and married couples will no doubt see themselves in some of the situarevelatotions. Not ry fare, but mostly pleasant nonetheless.
