The delicate testing methods used in the vaccine field trial have resulted in finding scores of hitherto unidentified viruses. We call these tiny particles "orphan" viruses. It is possible that some may cause paralysis. Work must go on toward learning more about them, and toward combating any that may cause polio-lik- e symptoms. of Hill 7t 11 --- Wca't sfclft, rii3 cr sK3 ever cr.!7 ttrfs gfcncus fcr Fbjfcx is 'rffos ...snd yrj fasfciens, tco tn lb spots clastic side panels that The reason is the bias-cto your every motion to give you complete comfort at all times ... no matter how active you are, no matter what sire self-adju- st ut Ki of J "custom-contoure- A d" elastic and nylon to give no matter perfect fit and comfort size you are what size or Nylon cups round and raise excitingly Snowy white, wonderfully wash-- , able without ironing. IfAMIIV WIIKIY MAGAZINE JUNE 14, 1933 MMttaf lpk totweIs still M have made Although great progress toward the prevention of paralytic polio we still do not have a simple, accurate, and rapid diagnostic test for the disease. Such tests as are available are extremely complicated and are performed only in research laboratories. For that" reason, investigators in many parts of the country are working to find a quick, inexpensive diagnostic test. The polio vaccine now being used in this country is made from virus grown on cells of monkey kidney. This 1 C ft - Kv. af (Continued) but a few that show promise C SI MEKiK 7 EJECT- Br: ing produced commercially by the 'nation's leading pharmaceutical nouses under rigid scientific standards. Safety ( means that monkeys must be flown to the United States from abroad at great expense. It is obviously undesirable to have our vaccine supply dependent on shipments of these animals. Our situation would be much better if we had a normal animal cell which could be grown continuously in laboratories here, and which would in turn support the growth of polio virus. A few strains of such cells have been grown for as long as 16 months, but none has been found which will multiply rapidly enough to meet the enormous requirements of vaccine production. Research to find the sort of normal cell we need and we believe that eventually we will find it is going on in laboratories in Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Berkeley. Finally, we still have paralytic polio. March of Dimes aid must be given, to the thousands of men, women, and children already stricken who depend on us for help. We must be ready to assist those who will contract polio before we have sufficient vaccine supplies for all who wish to be vaccinated. n In the last years, we have progressed from a half-doze- point where polio research still seemed to be far from providing successful prevention of the paralytic disease to a situation in which millions of youngsters already have been vaccinated and more millions will be in the months ahead. The achievement has been without parallel in the long history of medicine. What makes the ceaseless fight against polio unique, of course, is that it has been a fight in which you and the other millions of American people, through the March of Dimes, have been part of a partnership with scientistsit should make you as a con- tributor proud of what your dimes have accomplished. It should make us all realize what tremendous strength we have to accomplish a major undertaking, no matter how difficult it may be, once we set our sights and get to work voluntarily. x |
