Show scientist Dr. Jonas E. Salic, the who developed the polio vaccine, enjoys an evening with his wife and their three sons. now-famo- us to by Dr. Hart E. Van Riper Medical Director. National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis cent work Dr. Salk has presented evidence that the vaccine is more effective if given in two shots from two to four weeks apart, followed not earlier than seven months but before the next polio season, by a third or booster shot This new schedule is being adopted this year in the community vaccination programs using Foundation vaccine. Accordingly, all youngsters who receive two shots this Summer should have one more injection during the coming Winter or Spring. Many parents naturally wonder whether the vaccine -- . it would be better for children to receive it before an epidemic, so they can build up advance immunity. Nevertheless, Dr. Salk believes that the vaccine will be of some value even after an epidemic has started. When two shots are given two weeks apart, immunization rises to a maximum about a month after the first shot, but some protection is achieved much earlier. Let me emphasize, however, that the vaccine is a preventive, not a cure. It is of no value for children who of children who have received the vaccine, expect to learn much more about the duration of protection, and "e whether further booster injections are necessary. The vaccine itself is still being improved. We believe the product being used this year can promote more powerful protection than that employed in the 1954 field trials. In addition, research on what are known as vac- live-vir- us cines will continue. It has been suggested that protection against paralytic polio may some day be provided by primary injections with the vaccine developed by Dr. Salk, followed by a booster shot of a live-virpreparation. Further research will . reveal whether this is so. -- us There are always individuals who for one reason or another do not have themselves vaccinated, or who do not develop immunity as the result of vaccination. For these persons, no polio cure is available. March of Dimes funds, however, are supporting an extensive research program seeking drugs which might be used for polio treat ment. All of us have been so heartened by the success of the vaccine, we may be inclined to suppose that the war against polio already has been won. This is not true. Let me point out a few of the things that remain to be done. First, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis will continue to support research on polio vaccine itself. Since it is a new product, we do not yet know how long its effectiveness lasts. We can only learn this by following for some years the experience is of use once a polio epidemic has started.
