Show Fathers on Founder's Dream of Honoring All Fathers h Realized; 1955!Marcs 44th Dad's Day 1: In 1909 that Mrs. John of Spokane, WashDodd Bruce It was ington, was inspired with the idea that a day should be set aside to honor Fathers. Her own father, William Smart, civil war veteran, had been completely devoted 4o hiar six motherless children, rearing them with loving care on a farm in eastern Washington. The childhood Impression of a father training his children, guarding the home, respecting the marriage ties, protecting womanhood stayed with Mrs. Todd. She had a deep feeling about the importance ot i a Father's place in the home, and felt that it was not appreciated. Mrs. Dodd gained the Interest of her minister in her idea of a day to honor Father. He in turn was able to interest the Spokane Ministerial Alliance who warmly velcomed the plan. It was the Young Men's Christian Associa tion in Spokane who put the idea into real action in 1910. The actual date for Father's Day was decided upon for a very human reason. Mrs. Dodd had wanted to perpetuate! her Father's birthday which is on June 5th. But. there was not enough time back in 1909 for the ministers to prepare their sermons by that date. And so, the third Sunday in June was chosen as the official date;, because it left ample time for all preparations. Mrs. Dodd points with pride to the fact that William Jennings Bryan was one of those who first endorsed' her idea. In 1916 Presi dent Woodrow Wilson pressed-- a button in the White House herald Ing the day. In 1924 .President recommended that Coolidge Father's Day be nationally ob served. Mrs. Dodd has the hope that one day Congress will of ficially recognize Father's Day as it has recognized Mother's Day. Perhaps her greatest thrill came in 1952 when her own son, John Bruce Dodd Jr., associated with our National Park Service, was named "Ideal Father" by the District of Columbia where he resides. Mrs. Dodd is now widowed. She continues to live in her na tive state of Washington. The entire nation honors her on June 19th for her inspiring idea, as we honor our Fathers. 2-- B SUNDAY, JUNE 12, 1955 Utah County.
