He is accompanied prets four by Wendell Marshall on bass and Butch Ballard on drums. The four new titles in this grouping are compositions by the Duke, and if it's mood music you like you'll get an earful here. Two of the titles are of particular interest "Reflections in D" to be is a spontaneous piece that rates appreciated, and "B Sharp Blues" is a tongue-in-chevariation of a theme typically Ellington. Some months ago Columbia Records launched a new idea in recorded jazz. Invitations were issued to select jazzmen to "come to the Columbia Studios prepared to play anything that comes to mind, for a real jam session." One of the results of these sessions is the "Huckle Buck" and "Robbins Nest" played by the Buck Clayton group. The over-a- ll form of "Robbins Nest" builds to a of the way through and then climax descends to a relaxed close. Some of the impromptu effects could not have been surpassed if they had been rehearsed. A good example is the rising chord coming out of Sir Charles Thompson's fifth piano chorus in "Huckle Buck." The Clayton Jam Session version has 63 choruses with an introduction and two verses thrown in for good measure, and runs a shade more than 20 minutes. "Robbins Nest," written by Sir Charles Thompson, is a reminder of the bop era of jazz. A BUCK CLAYTON JAM SESSION. a D-DJ12X f GOODMAN. Capitol LP Album 'Til Always Be in Love with You," "I Know That You Know," "St J Louis Blues," "Bannister Slide," "Love Is Just Around the Corner," "I'll Never Be the Same,"; "Cherokee," "Music, Maestro Please." Benny rides again on this Capitol reissue of his 1947 " group, The musicians accompanying Benny read like a Who's Who of jazz--Red Norvo, Ernie Felice, Jess Stacy, Jimmy Rowles, Teddy Wilson, and many more. While this may not be the best Benny Goodman has to offer, he still remains articulate and plays entertainingly. Note Ernie Felice's uncommon accordion interpretations.
