In the first place, bad management of dumping grounds in the past is a virtual assurance of the same treatment of future dumps, regardless of good intentions or promises. An in the second place, the commission has set a precedent that will haunt any decision for years to come. Some months ago. the commission selected a garbage dump east of Sandy. Residents in the area screamed in righteous indignation, and the commission backed down. With that precedent, the commission am expect that whatever site it may select w ill arouse a tornado of objection, and these objectors have t lie right to expect the same consideration that the people living on the east bench received. The Sentinel pointed out before that there is onlv one solution to the garbage problem incineration. The commission fumbled this one. too. If an honest effort had been made the county could have had. we believe, one of the smelter stacks. A private access road from 64th South would have permitted trucks to enter from both sides of the vallev without creating additional traffic in any city. There are stacks at Murray, but to reach them the garbage trucks would have to go through Murray city, creating an obnoxious problem that no city wants. Through its own procrastination, ineptness, and inabilito stav with its original decison. the commission has workty ed itself into an untenable and unenviable position. We believe the county needs a garbage incineration plant a whole lot worse than it needs a new county if ice building. An incinerator, properly handled, can be a source of revenue: an office building will always be an expense. If the county has to bond itself, lei it be for a garbage incinerator, anil let the profits from the incinerator construct the office building. MIDVALE THE White City SENTINEL (Utah) Friday.
