Show THE MIDVALE SENTINEL (Utah) jumped from 50 per cent in 1953 to 67 per cent this year. On the Nebo Friday, October 29 1954 unit the kill was 57 per cent (down slightly from the 62 per cent of the 1953 hunt). Reports are not yet in from the Manti units where the hunts were held from Oct. 9 through 13. The Page Seven Ashley-Dagget- Brown's t. Every year 300 or more elk are illegally killed and left to spoil during the annual deer hunting season, according to estimates of the Department of Fish and Game. Department efforts are increased each year toward curtailing this slaughter. Signs warning the hunter that he is in an area where elk range are placed on entrance trails and roadways into such sections. Spokesmen note that each animal illegally killed means one less permit allowable for Utah's elk harvest during the next season. It also means that an average of 90,000 pounds of prime game meat has been wasted. At the cheap price of 30 cents per pounds this amounts to a dollar loss of $27,000. Officials are again urging all ologists during surveys made following the reported loss of trout in this stream. Duck Creek Springs, source of, the stream, is known to find its source in part from seepage waters from the bottom of Navajo Lake some seven miles away. Possibility of fish losses in the stream was considered as one of the probabilities vvhen the lake was treat (tf. The late survey showed less than an average load of hatchery fish lost through seepage of the lake water into the springs. Many trout are still in evidence in the stream. Final survey of trash fish killed in the lake shows double the number set during original estimates, or nearly 10 tons. Navajo will be restocked with trout during the early spring months. Complaints from landowners and sportsmen alike concerning the running of bird dogs in farm pheasant areas are coming in increasing numbers to the Department of Fish and Game. that the 'capturing or chasing of any game birds or animals" is a misdemeanor punishable by fine and. or imprisonment. Department spokesmen note that a minimum amount of field training of bird dogs has been permitted in the past. Proper training of these animals is considered a move in the direction of better conservation through birds recovered in season which otherwise would be lost to the hunter. They cite the need for dog owners to exercise every precaution with dogs in training them in the open fields. Even more important is the need to get landowner permission before entering private property. Flying en the Ground When an Air Force installation recently completed 100.000 hours of training in a flight simulator, it was determined that this ground training was the equivalent to flying 15 million miles at 150 miles transper hour in a aircraft. port type That's equal to about 600 Himes around the world. The flight simulator duplicates flying problems on the ground. twin-engine- Landowners are especially concerned where dogs are being run in fields where some crops are still not harvested.
