Hart said that the adult Black Hills Beetle bores through the back of a healthy tree and lays its eggs along a verticle chamber just under the bark. After the eggs, hatch, the larvae spread outward feeding on the soft sapwood tissue of the tree before entering the pupa stage finally emerging as an adult the following July. Each beetle carries a fungus called Blue Stain into the tree with it. The action of the fungus coupled with the bor ing of many thousand beetles kills an infested tree within the year. State Funds will be spent co operatively by Forestry and Fire Control and Forest Service officers. The State of Utah will actually pay the per tree costs of treatment for infested trees in state and private ownership. Forestry and Fire Control personnel feel that this action by the State Government is an illustration of the willingness of states to adequately protect their own renewable resources. The state already has an ambitious fire control program to help protect its forest and watershed resources. State officials were concerned that the infestation, which has in volved Tonderosa Tine in state, private and federal ownership, would grow to disasterous propor tions. Emergency action was taken in authorizing a deficit appropria tion to the Board of Forestry and Fire Control to treat infested trees in state and private ownership.
