Show THE MIDVALE Page Three "These Kids of Ours" P. M. MICKELSEN Director of Pupil Personnel, Jordan School District THE OTHER CHILD After a recent meeting a mother requested help with her family. She told me that she had three children a boy two, a boy eight, and a girl twelve years of age. She said that Frank, the eight year old, is becoming unruly, stubborn and difficult to live with. He teases and abuses his small brother and is continually at odds with his sister. When reproved by his mother, he complains that nobody loves him or pays any attention to him anymore. Frank really is in a poor strategic position in the family and must be given every reasurrance possible. He must stand aside for his baby brother who, because of his helplessness, demands and receives the attentions of the family group which otherwise would be given to Frank. His sister, as the eldest child and the only girl, likewise has attained status. This leaves Frank neither the oldest nor the youngest, and thus not entitled to any special consideration. No wonder he feels rejected and alone and is impelled to conduct not pleasing to his parents. Perhaps Frank was not prepared for the coming of the baby and saw in him only a rival for his mother's love and attention. His mother may have led him to believe that he was bad just because he felt hostility toward the new arrival. It does no good to be shocked at the child's apparent hatred of a baby brother. Nor will the situation be bettered if she exhorts, moralizes, threatens or punishes. It will not help to point out to Frank that because of his greater age and obligations he should treat the baby better. These tactics only makes him more sure than ever that he has lost his mother's love and that being had he has been cast out, with another taking his place. We must remember that children, when they feel rejected for having been judged bad, usually respond by behaving worse, not better. Frank's mother must not expect to cure this situation at once, but I am sure if she will work intelligently at it, she will see improvement. She must take steps to restore a feeling of security in the SENTINEL Calif., visited with his parents, Mr & Mrs Leland Goff Saturday, while enroute to Chanute Air Force Base child. The scientific geniuses who can make atoms sit up and say " Uncle!" certainly ought to be able to put the traditional Thanksgiving bird on a firmer footing. Maybe crossing it with a centipede or even an octopus might solve the drumstick dilemma. This may sound ridiculous, but how many people 20 years ago ever dreamed of radar or supersonic flight? We are for the candidate who can promise us more drumsticks and less turkey hash. Some thieves in Dallas stole $120 from Emma Sutton's refrigerator. It sound as though they were cool and collected.
