Is he a man rich beyond the dreams of avarice who, in company with a handful of other What itW '-- 4--- is a men on the same stratospheric economic level, owns and enjoys the fruits of American corporate industry? That idea still has credence in some quarters, but it is a piece of fiction far removed from the prosaic truth. A typical stockholder is the neighbor next door, the druggist on the corner, the doctor who treats your child for whooping cough, and the man who fives your car when it begins to make strange and ominous noises. For example, take one of the corporations listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It has nearly 1,000,000 stockholders. Of these, more than 250,000 people own from one to five shares $1500 to $7550 worth at recent market prices. And not a single one of the 1,000,000 stockholders owns as much of one percent of the company's stock. f as Or take an automobile manufacturing company, with 400,000 stockholders. A third of them own less than $1,000 worth of stock. So it goes, down the long line of listed securities on exchanges all over the country. Stockholders are, literally, millions of people 15,000,000 to be more or less exact, and the number is constantly growing. It is obvious that the great the really rich, bulk of these people have average incomes and are a mighty socialists of the cries communists, the despite who have are rare commodity. For a moment, think about Benjamin Franklin who was born January 17, 170(. A brief summary of as versatile an individual is impossible. He was a fearless printer and publisher. His services to America in England and France rank him as one of the heroes of the American War for Independence and as the greatest of American diplomats.
